I caught this little guy on video while I was on vacation in Granby, Colorado, and at first I thought he might just be a confused baby bird! He spent SO long working the center of these sunflowers, way longer than you'd expect from a quick nectar stop.
Turns out it's totally normal behavior. Sunflower centers aren't one flower, they're actually hundreds of tiny individual "disc florets," each with its own little bit of nectar, and they open in rings over several days. So he was likely working floret by floret. He may also have been hunting for tiny insects hiding in there, since hummingbirds eat way more bugs than people realize, especially this time of year when they're fueling up for migration.
Either way, watching him work that flower over was pretty mesmerizing. Have you ever caught your hummingbirds doing this?
