The Perennial Homestead

The Perennial Homestead A seasonal shop specializing in simple things for special days Flash forward to March 2020 - everything changed in an instant.

Some of you who’ve been here from the start may recall that our little candy business, Snowshoe Candy Co., started as a companion to a market farm where I worked - a perfect off-season craft to celebrate the colder days & “make winter warmer”. As Scott & I pursued our own market farm enterprise, we continued the adventures in candy making in the off season. When we moved to our current homestead i

n 2017, the lines between the seasons began to blur & we realized that we need not compartmentalize our life into two tidy boxes: Candy making & homesteading. How they belonged together, we wouldn’t quite understand until the passing of more seasons & the changing of our brand last year to Snowshoe & Company- an attempt to link the many interests we have as a family & as a business. Suddenly, we were working together as a family from home, growing our dream homestead garden & tasting what it felt like to work together for “real”. Along with the sadness that comes from a pandemic sweeping our world, climate-disasters wreaking havoc on our earth & social justice issues front & center, there was a sweetness of being & working together. Our new brand, The Perennial Homestead, feels like it’s been here all along - it’s part of our family and our life. The word “perennial” means “lasting or existing for a long or apparently infinite time; enduring or continually recurring” and captures the lifestyle we seek - one that looks to our ancestors for skills, wisdom and knowledge, and looks to our future, crafting goods, learning skills and sharing the abundance in a way that continues for generations to come. To us, to “homestead” is a radical act of reclaiming the skills to create a life in tune with the world around us. One that is in community with nature and with our neighbors. Our brand seeks to create goods that are from the land, crafted with care, honor the makers, and bring joy to everyday.

✨ The Florence Mercantile Market ✨

It was pretty darn magic to see the quiet downtown Florence strip bustling with neighbors, friends, community members, and shoppers! With over 35 vendors from the surrounding neighborhoods and beyond, there was such a beautiful mix of handmade goods, thoughtfully sourced vintage wears, and food items.

There’s so much history in this little business district and I know there’s a bright future here too!

Much gratitude to David Potter | Realtor of The Florence Mercantile for seeing the vision and gathering the hands to pull this off! And our market crew Kelsey Landenberger, Omaha Real Estate Agent Mami Monstera & Brian 💪 And thank goodness for my sweet Jacquie for holding down the booth ✨ here’s a little highlight reel ✨

Against all odds (aka the soft neck garlic drying a liiiiiittle bit more than ideal, etc etc etc), we managed to make a couple garlic braids, one of my favorite things to make - and fingers crossed we can make a few more for the farm stand!
