In 18th century London, Dudley Bradstreet, in an attempt to bypass taxes on gin, invented gin dispensers shaped like cats, known as “Puss and mew machines.” They were mounted on the exterior walls of shops or houses.

Someone thirsty would whisper to the device, “Puss, do you have any gin?” If the answer was, “Mew,” the customer would drop a coin in the cat’s mouth. The coin fell through a tube to the seller, who poured a shot of gin down a funnel that flowed out through a pipe hidden beneath the cat’s paw into the buyer's glass.
