Dahlias really said “you get ONE chance to cut me right” and meant it.
Unlike that bouquet of grocery store tulips, dahlias do NOT keep opening in the vase once you cut them. Whatever stage they’re at in the garden when you cut them, they are stuck at forever. Cut too early and you have basically adopted that bud that will never grow up.
This is the sweet spot - not tight, not fully blown open and dropping petals on your counter. Juuuust right.
It takes a little practice to train your eye for it, but once you start paying attention you’ll see the difference.
Tag a dahlia loving friend who is Goldilocks looking for that juuuust right.
And if you’re a backyard Gardner trying to grow more flowers and slightly less chaos, follow along for Flower School- where we share what we’re learning here on the farm.
