Paul compares the church to a farm or garden. He started the church (planted the seed), and Apollos came after him to build on his work (he watered it )

Paul was addressing divisions in the church. People were arguing over which leader or teacher was better.

Paul argued that neither the planter nor the waterer is in competition or deserves special glory. They are merely servants, and it is God who brings the life and the growth.
