The best and most unexpected thing about owning bookstores is becoming a visible and physical part of communities. It’s given me a new appreciation for neighbors. even in a place like San Francisco— the small town fabric is still there if you look up from devices and ask for it. I was working from home today and got an alert that a quilt from had arrived. These quilts sell out in less than thirty seconds, y’all!! I’ve been trying to get one for forever!! I ran outside eagerly…. No quilt. Our mailman, Patrick, walked by who I’ve never talked to in DECADES of living here. I asked him about it and he called the guy who delivers packages and realized he’d swapped two digits in the address. He jogged off to THAT HOUSE, found my quilt and came back with it beaming. “My mom makes quilts,” he said. “I know how special they are.” If I’d tried submitting a missing package request via AI who knows if I’d ever have seen it. People are just better. I can tell you as bookstore owners we know how special mailmen and delivery people of all kind are!!! We ship thousands of pounds of paper all over the country everyday and we couldn’t get you these life changing words without them!!!! So thank you Patrick thank you San Francisco USPS! (and RADISH! You need to stop barking at Patrick!!)
