********** ******************** artist. . I first became acquainted with Mateo’s paintings 🖼️ n the mid 1990’s while working for the prestigious Gallery 10, a Native American Art gallery owned by Lee Cohen. I can still see one of his paintings from that show now. I recall the pop art nature of it characterized by bright colors and bold strokes to create an image with a stop sign. Mateo Romero was born December of 1966 in Berkeley California where he was also raised. He is from the Cochiti Tribe in New Mexico. He first went off to Dartmouth College and received his BFA and then attended the Institute of American Indian Art. Eventually he obtained his MFA in printmaking at the University of New Mexico.
Mateo is famed for his printmaking and paintings, often incorporating photographs that are either historical or of his own taking. Mateo also paints vibrant acrylics of the New Mexico desert, Cochiti Pueblo and Pojoque Pueblo where he lives and where his wife is from. Notably, Mateo was the Dublin Fellow in 2002, exhibited in Canada and the United States and was asked to create the SWAIA poster in 2008. He has also been awarded the Native Living Treasures Award in New Mexico. Most recently, his art was showcased through the United States Postal Service Forever Stamps. They were released in April of 2025 and depicted Pow Wow dancers he photographed and painted himself. Mateo Romeros ‘ acrylic and mixed media paintings are sold in renowned galleries throughout the Southwest and world.
