The Temple of Jupiter, on display and available at Collective Visions Gallery for this month of May.
Edward Gibbon, author of the six-volume The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire:
"It was at Rome, on the 15th of October, 1764, as I sat musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol, while the barefooted friars were singing vespers in the Temple of Jupiter, that the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started to my mind."
When Gibbon presented the second volume to the Duke of Gloucester, brother of King George III, the prince exclaimed "Another damned thick, square book! Always, scribble, scribble, scribble! Eh! Mr. Gibbon?"
This abstract representation includes the late afternoon sun, temple columns, and the figure of the god Jupiter once residing inside the temple.
Our piece in the Love, Loss, and Light Show at Rimbert Illustration this month is The Temple of Jupiter. It includes the light of the setting sun.
