The Temple of Jupiter, on display and available at Collective Visions Gallery for this month of May.

Edward Gibbon, author of the six-volume The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire:

"It was at Rome, on the 15th of October, 1764, as I sat musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol, while the barefooted friars were singing vespers in the Temple of Jupiter, that the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started to my mind."

When Gibbon presented the second volume to the Duke of Gloucester, brother of King George III, the prince exclaimed "Another damned thick, square book! Always, scribble, scribble, scribble! Eh! Mr. Gibbon?"

This abstract representation includes the late afternoon sun, temple columns, and the figure of the god Jupiter once residing inside the temple.

Our piece in the Love, Loss, and Light Show at Rimbert Illustration this month is The Temple of Jupiter. It includes the light of the setting sun.

"Alien robots marooned on Mars' moon Phobos have discovered, among other things, the old Marlene Dietrich movies on Earth's electronic network. They have become obsessed with her and, in addition to skate boarding websites, she is a central part of their culture in their new home.

The film "Witness for the Prosecution", a 1957 movie starring Marlene, they have come to see it in particular as a drama summing up human civilization on Earth: A society enveloped in an eternal series of double crosses, with Marlene Dietrich as the hero of a vanguard fighting to change all that. I try to tell them it's just a movie, but they don't quite understand.

I have a lot of important questions to ask them, about where they come from and so forth and so on, but it is hard because of the static in the communications channel on my 1980's GE digital electric clock radio and because all they seem to want to talk about is Ms. Dietrich.

My Marlene Dietrich on the Moon Phobos (3) is part of a series of sculptures I've made attempting to reproduce the sort of line drawings in space they have broadcast towards Earth in an attempt to communicate."
