Absolutely mesmerized by this! Did you have any idea that hydrolats could show off colors like these? It's all because of the plant compounds reacting with copper from the stills. It's moments like these that remind me how captivating chemistry can be, and why continual experimentation and learning are key to mastering it. 🌿✨

From left to right - Ocimum
tenuiflorum AKA Tulsi Basil (yellow), Oregano vulgare AKA Oregano (pink), and Matricaria chamomilla AKA Blue Chamomile (blue).

Had such lovely people visit this week to learn how to distill essential oils and hydrolats. A family visiting from India, a group from Pennsylvania with more people visiting this weekend.

Still distilling beautiful lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) that grows on the property, she is definitely one of my faves. I like to have a tablespoon of hydrolat in a glass of mineral water and use it in broth. It is potent as a shot creating a range of emotions in the mouth including a tongue numbing experience - it is wild. And while there is a crossover in applications, drinking essential oil is never a good idea however it is a wonderful addition to cleaning; it is also helpful to get bugs in their own space; to energize and uplift and can also act as a nervine helping with anxiety and staying calm, and helping with viruses, fungus and bacteria. It can be used in skincare, however it does have safety issues and before doing that would research correct dermal restrictions before use.
How do you like to use lemongrass?

One thing I love about teaching is that I always learn from my guests too, the picture here of the tied up lemongrass is how it is traditionally done in Indian. A few of the upper stalks can be placed in black tea, sometimes with fresh ginger too. The family that visited was happy to take some with them to use while in the USA this way.

Are you interested in learning the foundations of distilling essential oils and hydrolats, then come visit me upstate NY. 🤍🙏🏻

My first attempt at zero waste skin care. While these facial cleansing bars do not look that fancy yet, they are a step in a formulator's journey to perfecting product and they work beautifully. It is so nice not to see plastic bottles in my shower anymore!
Sustainability and treading lighter on our beautiful Earth is a big priority as I move forward with my new exciting organic skin line .beauty & I'd love if you all followed me there too 🙏🏻💙

The making of a triple-dose therapeutic cream targeted towards alleviating psoriasis.
This was the first step of a digestion Lavandula angustifolia into some extra virgin organic olive oil.
I prefer the digestion method over a cold infusion mainly as I like to formulate in consistent steps if possible.
This was a 1:10 (w:v)and the infusion sat at between 49C-60C for over 3 hours, before I took it off and strained it through cheese cloth.

The last year has taken so much of my time studying a BaHSc in Naturopathic Medicine. But, I love it and am so excited to be back in my home town of Melbourne studying a portion of that program, being Herbal Medicine Making.
This Lavandula angustifolia is the focus for one of my assessments, where I am formulating from scratch a skin cream to target psoriasis. These flowers are going to be dried and infused in a fatty acid oil as one of the ingredients. I love formulating, but researching lavender for this assessment in the ancient texts has been fascinating too. I feel I had a pretty solid level of understanding on Lavandula angistifolia, but learning about it from more of a herbal perspective has been such an eye-opener. Moral of the story, never stop learning, the plants have so much to share with us!

Got dew, this can help!

Our Lavender & Jojoba Body Oil is so soothing, and also powerful. It is simplicity at its best with just 3 ingredients with a perfectly formulated ratio, which nourishes, softens and protects the body.

But, not just that.

You can slather it on after a shower to lock moisture into the body of course, and at night the aroma is comforting to lull one to sleep for sure. Besides that, it has a host of other uses, like using on bug bites or scratches to speed up healing, to help tame a little one's temper, or adding to the hair to tame and add shine.

So many uses, one glass bottle.

Organic. Non-GMO. Vegan.

Where do your strengths lie making plant remedies?

Me, I am an more of an academic rather than a maker per se. Meaning, I really love hitting the books and wrapping my head around how these plants work in the body, which I guess is really helpful as I am undertaking a BaSc in naturopathic medicine at moment, and it is a lot of reading! But, I also recognize I have to balance this up a bit and start being that herbalist & aromatherapist that well makes more.

So, moving forward, every weekend, it is my goal to aromatically formulate products that I can use in my dailies with a focus on what I coexist here with on this land.

Last weekend it was the rose & white tea under-eye I formulated, and this weekend I have also been busy. I distilled our christmas tree (Pinus strobus) into a beautiful hydrolat, and that hydrolat has become the menstrum (as well as organic white vinegar) for fresh pine needles, to make a window and multi-purpose spray for around the home.

This picture is how it will stay for the next 4 weeks, at which time, after the plant medicine has had time to pass over to the menstrum, I will filter it and use it to clean. I will also share some with friends so they can enjoy it too. I can already tell it is going to be beautiful, a double white pine remedy, it just has to be. I love this tree, and it grows all over the property where I live.

What about you, do you have a formula you love to make from local plants?

⚗️Distill it - Christmas tree🎄not going to waste this year. And, the start of a new tradition around here. Cannot wait to see how beautiful this hydrolat turns out!

t is a cold and chilly winter night upstate New York, and what better time than to be in the studio formulating beautiful plant-based beauty products.

Say hello to our Rose & Green Tea hydrating eye gel which we are so happy with, as it turned out better than expected.

Honestly though, I was not sure whether to share this video because it is very clinical, as it is preferred to show the raw beauty of what Wythe & Berry revolves around, meaning the plants. But, it also important to show the process, right? For us, when formulating products, it is imperative to be clinical and clean, as well as precise with dosage and process. Additionally, choosing eco-friendly additives like preservatives, gums and solubilisers helps pave the way to incorporate these beautiful plants into remedies to be used safely at home.

Our beauty products have a strong affinity with what we distill here upstate New York on copper alembic stills - essential oils and hydrolats (aromatic waters). Essential oils were not used in this under-eye gel though, as they are too strong to use around the delicate eye area. But, hydrolats were for their gentle approach, and it smells nothing short of divine.

Watch the formulation process incorporating the main ingredients of green tea (Camellia sinensis) hydrolat, which is called upon to decongest and reduce dark circles. While rose (Rosa damascena) is refreshing, soothing and tonifying and a wonderful additive to support healthy aging process. Both are heralded for use in beautification remedies throughout history, and around the globe.

Do you ever formulate your own products. If not, would you like to learn

Early on in this journey and years ago, I used to feel like once winter arrived, it was more of a time to hit the books and work with dried herbs, oils, hydrolats etc. This way I continued on with my plant studies indoors until Spring arrived again. But, I don’t think like that anymore.

If you look, even if the ground is covered in snow, there are still botanicals to work with and learn from. Take today, it snowed a lot upstate New York, and it was such a lovely experience to go outside and photograph two said allies to share here with you - sumac (Rhus typhina) and pine (Pinus strobus).

Both can be used throughout winter freshly harvested. Pine is beautiful distilled, or in preparations like oxymels, tea blends and infused body oils. While the way I like to use sumac is in the ancient spice mixture of za’atar with other dried herbs and sea salt. I will share this process in a later post, as it is a wonderful additive to so much dishes and a nice way to incorporate herbals into your dailies without too much fuss.

What about where you live, do you have a favourite indigenous plant that you use fresh throughout winter?

Having now comfortably added ‘distiller’ to my list of skills, this was a wonder to facilitate a beautiful codistillation of locally -fallen spruce and pine on my copper alembic still.

Wanting to connect, in a world where home-bound is the new normal, I took a local wreath making class, and with a sustainable mind-set took home the scraps home to distill. I mean the wreath alone is beautiful and was so enjoyable to create, but to be able to continue on and preserve more of the therapeutics is a generous gift from our plant allies.

And, this is so exciting, in this blue bottle, is my first collection of essential oil! Open that lid and there is swift transportation to a lush evergreen forest where all is well. And, the spruce & pine aromatic water that was also distilled (hydrosol), wow, it is like a feeling of emotions run through my mouth when drinking it. Bounty abound, there is no turning back from this, I am truly besotted with the green nation🙏🏻💚 .
