Look how tall these marigolds are! 🧡 ‘Coco Deep Orange’ (Tagetes erecta) grows 24–36 inches tall, with gorgeous orange blooms that make wonderful cut flowers and last beautifully in a vase.

They’re already a favorite with our kids, and we can’t wait to plant them in our garden! 🍂

Alisha attended the Desert Green Conference in Las Vegas at the end of September—a conference focused on helping plants, landscapes, and communities thrive in the desert! 🌿

She came home with fresh ideas, practical knowledge about desert horticulture, and inspiration from others in the green industry working toward more sustainable landscapes. She’s excited to share what she learned and help Ridgecrest create thriving desert gardens!

Want to hear more? Alisha will be speaking at the Rotary Club of China Lake’s luncheon on November 4 at 11:30 a.m. at Charlie’s Restaurant, inside the Clarion Inn at 901 N. China Lake Blvd., Ridgecrest.

💨 Mother Nature Has Other Plans!

Hurricane Rachel is expected to arrive Sunday morning, and she's sending the wind ahead of her! 🌬️

(Yes, we know it won't actually be a hurricane in Ridgecrest, but a little drama seems appropriate for our unfortunate cancellation! 😂)

Since we'd rather enjoy the music than blow away with it, we're rescheduling The High Desert Pipers for an evening with better weather!

🍋🍊 Feeling Adventurous? Give Citrus a Try!

If you enjoy a little gardening challenge, why not try adding a citrus tree to your garden? With some extra care during our hot summers and protection from winter freezes, you might just be rewarded with homegrown citrus!

🌿 Improved Meyer Lemon – Sweeter and less acidic than traditional lemons. Great for cooking, baking, and lemonade!

🌿 Bearss Lime – Produces juicy, nearly seedless limes. Loves the heat but needs extra protection from winter freezes.

🌿 Fukushu Kumquat – Produces small, sweet-tart fruit you can eat whole! One of the more cold-tolerant citrus varieties.

Citrus can be challenging in our Mojave Desert climate, but experimenting with new plants is part of the fun of gardening!

How did the ladies of Hyla Nursery survive another summer working outside in the desert heat? ☀️🌵

Lots of shade, good books, and strawberry smoothies from Pony Espresso! 🍓🥤 Those smoothies quickly became our go-to summer treat while we cooled off at the table, talked plants, and swapped thoughts on our latest reads.

One of our favorites this summer was Douglas Tallamy’s Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard. It sparked some great conversations about the difference we can make right in our own yards—and how we can thoughtfully incorporate more California natives and other habitat-friendly plants into our Ridgecrest landscapes. 🌿🐝🦋

My heart is very full after celebrating three years of Hyla Nursery. 💜🌿

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us at the Ridgecrest Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours. Looking around the nursery and seeing so many familiar faces was incredibly comforting. These are people who have stopped by season after season, supported this little business, shared kind words, recommended us to friends, and watched Hyla Nursery grow. And seeing new faces was just as exciting—a reminder that our little nursery community is still growing.

A very special thank you to Chuck Bolt and Paul for sharing their beautiful voices and music with us. You created such a wonderful atmosphere for the evening. And a huge debt of gratitude to Laura Quezada of High Desert Music Fan for the fabulous referral. 💜

Hyla Nursery has been a labor of love from the very beginning. There has been a lot of hard work, plenty of dirt, some very long days, and a whole lot of heart poured into this place. But Hyla Nursery was never meant to be just somewhere you come to buy a plant.

I want it to be a place that belongs to our community. A place where you can slow down for a little while. Where you can wander through the plants, listen to the birds and bees, visit with a friend, or just sit and enjoy being outside.

So please come by—even if you don't need a plant. Bring a friend, a book, your morning coffee or favorite drink, pull up a chair at one of our tables, and enjoy the gardens. Stay awhile.
