But can you save the genetics?

A couple of hives in dead Eucalyptus that were being cut down due to risks to nearby homes presented many issues.

The cavities were long and narrow and beyond reach. We couldn't cut into the trees because of the risk that they would crash on houses. The trees had been making creaking & cracking sounds for a couple of weeks and a lean was increasing on one of them. This was a rush job for sure.

So Jeff spent a great deal of time with his arms reaching as far up the narrow opening as possible. The bees were not happy with this method . . .

We know Queens, we know they run and hide. Knowing that we reduced the numbers as much as possible so that the next day we might be able to go back and locate the huddle containing her.

Worked.

Well a little unexpected swarm.

Absconding are common and we dealth with serveral this week so a 2 lb swarm with mixed age bees, a few drones and a Queen is very uncommon this time of year.

Just collected them with the portable vac and called it a day.

Dumped them in a nuc with a frame of stores and will get a frame of brood tomorrow for them

Sometime you just wonder, do people look up?.

This morning we dealt with calls about a tree that was cut down and surprise bees were in it, bees in a chimney (after they lit a fire on Labor weekend) and bees in a historical home under going repairs.

A little Labor for the day.

About a week ago this little group showed up over the driveway. We assume it is from an absconding from heat, pests or robbing. When they realized that there was comb they contacted the App.

With that said they were really giving it a go as the small group had built comb and the Queen was laying already.

Put them in a Mini Breeding Nuc until we can decide what to do with her.

Used a Battery vac took 5 mins, got the queen. Waited 10 mins and collected the strays as they had landed in the cool of the morning back on the comb.

It was time, rains coming soon, robbing and aggression here now.

Had to wait until the kids were gone and we knew it would be dark by the time we finished but what can you do but get to it.

Once we got the limbs cut so we could get close it was just a Battery Vac and time.

You might notice the bucket hanging from a pully - makes moving brood down and tools up easy.

Beekeeping has been easy the last few years for a couple of reasons. Having only a few dozen hives of course helps but having basically zero mites is the big difference.

OADe works when used correctly makes for relaxed beekeeping !
