🖌️ John Horton / Sacramento Artist (John Horton) - A Sacramento multidisciplinary artist known for his large-scale murals across Sacramento, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles. Working across painting, sculpture, and design, John’s work explores the intersection of technology and humanism through bold abstract forms.

🖼️ Groundswell (John Johnson) - Owner and art consultant at Groundswell Art, John has spent more than 25 years curating artwork, providing creative direction, and managing public and private art projects throughout Northern California.

💀 John S. Huerta (John Huerta) - An Arizona native and longtime Sacramento artist, John creates vibrant Día de los Muertos-inspired paintings and murals that honor loved ones through colorful portraits rooted in memory, culture, and celebration.

🎨 josedigregorioart (Jose Di Gregorio) - A self-taught artist whose signature style layers intricate geometric linework over vibrant cosmic gradients. For nearly 30 years, Jose’s abstract paintings have invited viewers to find their own meaning through color, pattern, and reflection.

✨ Josef Turner (Josef Turner) - A Sacramento multidisciplinary artist and founder of Self Designs Art Gallery, Josef is known for his intricate wire sculptures and graphite drawings while fostering the local arts community through exhibitions, open mics, and live music.

📣More celebration for the 40 Artists of Midtown🎨

Have you seen the new banners featuring each artist along 16th Street? Today we’re highlighting five more incredible honorees:

🖼️ I Street Art Studios — Located at 1727 I Street, the space features 19 resident artists in 4 studios with a large common gallery. The Art Studios (as they are known) is the longest continually operating art studio venue in Sacramento, with a deep history of nurturing new and emerging artists and providing space for the established.

Jaya King | Artist (Jaya King) — An interdisciplinary artist and muralist based, Jaya has worked with nonprofits, development agencies, the City of Sacramento, and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and is a Gloria Burt Sacramento Region Art Fellow and California Arts Council Impact grant recipient.

🎨 Ｊａｚｅｌ (Jazel Muñoz) — A q***r Chicanx printmaker, zinester, activist, and curator, Jazel’s practice is grounded in mutual aid, DIY culture, and amplifying marginalized voices. They serve as Gallery Curator at the Warehouse Artist Lofts’ WAL Public Market Gallery, have taught visual arts to artists with disabilities since 2017.

🖌️ Jeremy Stanger | Sacramento Artist (Jeremy Stanger) — A Sacramento-based painter and muralist, Jeremy’s self-taught craft spans over two decades, rooted in a graffiti background and eight years as a decorative artist in New York City. He creates meticulously planned murals focused on geometric designs, letterforms, and natural materials.

JM Knudsen (JM Knudsen) — Also known as “Kanute,” JM is a California-based multifaceted visual artist, muralist, designer, photographer, and curator. His public art spans London, Paris, Barcelona, and Ericeira, Portugal with mounted gallery exhibitions in Paris, Barcelona, and Ericeira.

Every Saturday the Midtown Farmers Market Sacramento turns into so much more than a place to grab produce. It’s where small business dreams get their start. No lease, no huge upfront risk, just a table, a product, and a crowd of neighbors ready to show up for you. 🙌

A recent story by Sacramento Observer highlights how 21 Black-owned businesses are growing at the Market, week after week, building the kind of customer base that turns a side hustle into the real thing. That’s the whole point of this market. It’s opportunity, hand-crafted and homegrown, right in the heart of Midtown.💛

Celebrating the 40 Artists of Midtown 🎨

We are continuing to spotlight the 40 Artists of Midtown, a group of creatives whose work has helped define our neighborhood’s character across decades. Commemorative banners featuring each honoree now line 16th Street and today we’re highlighting five more incredible honorees:

🖼️ Archival Gallery (D. Oldham Neath) — For over four decades, D. Oldham Neath has been a driving force in the Northern California arts scene as owner and director of Archival Gallery. Since opening its doors in 1983, she has built it into Sacramento’s longest continuously running contemporary art space.

🔍 faith j. mckinnie (Faith McKinnie, MSML) — An independent curator and critic, Faith examines power, representation, and visibility in art history, lifting up voices outside the mainstream art establishment. She’s the founder of Sites of Vacancy and Black Artist Foundry. Stay tuned for more about Faith’s latest endeavor at Winn Park in a few short weeks 👀

🎨 Franceska Gámez (Franceska Gamez) — Born in Quezon City, Philippines and raised in the Bay Area, Franceska found her home in Sacramento while studying Fine Arts at Sacramento State. Known for her murals with M5’s Art Hotel, Art Street, and Wide Open Walls, she’s also co-founder of Sacramento’s 1810 Gallery and a member of the Trust Your Struggle Collective.

🖌️ Gabriel Lopez — A Sacramento-born graffiti and abstract artist, Gabriel has spent his life shaping and being shaped by the city’s art scene. His work blends color and movement with the lived experience of graffiti culture. Beyond the canvas, he’s also a podcast host and curator.

⚒️ Gina Rossi (Gina Rossi) — A certified welder and metal sculptor, Gina is best known for her functional, sculptural bike racks crafted from found and repurposed metals. She also teaches welding classes and she produced the Fremont Park Bloom illuminated poppies that were on display earlier this year.

To mark the 40th anniversary of Midtown Association, we are unveiling our list of the 40 Artists of Midtown, individuals who have called this neighborhood home, made it their canvas, and given it a voice. Their creativity and passion, spanning decades, mediums, and movements, have directly shaped Midtown into the vibrant neighborhood it is today.

To celebrate this legacy, 40 commemorative banners will go up along 16th Street tomorrow, each a tribute to the artists who have inspired, challenged, and elevated Midtown. From muralists and painters to sculptors and performers, these honorees reflect the rich diversity of artistic expression that makes our neighborhood special.

🎨 Meet Our First Five Artists:

🖼️ Barry Sakata (Barry Sakata) — In 1997, Barry launched B Sakata Garo, a Midtown gallery showcasing contemporary paintings, sculpture, ceramics, drawings, and prints. His deep passion for the art world keeps him connected to galleries and publications far beyond Sacramento.

🎺 Benwar Shepard (Benwat Shepard) — A South Sacramento native and member of the Sammie award-winning Element Brass Band, Benwar founded Bigger Than Us Arts (BTU), a nonprofit supporting community expression through exposure, instruction, and performance. His brass band leads second-line parades through Sacramento neighborhoods.

✍️ BRYAN VALENZUELA (Bryan Valenzuela) — Known for atomizing the human figure with handwritten text, Bryan’s technique creates form, shadow, and light layered with acrylic paint, gold leaf, and collage. His public art includes murals in San Francisco, Chicago, D.C., and New York.

🎨 Randall Langdeau (Cheyenne Randall) — A self-taught Sacramento artist working across mediums for 30+ years, Cheyenne is known for his “Shoppedtattoos” series and vibrant mixed media works honoring Indigenous North American leaders.

🎸 Clemon Charles (Clemón Charles) — A Sacramento-based singer-songwriter blending acoustic soul, folk, and pop, Clemón brings warmth and professionalism to stages at wineries, lounges, festivals, and community events across Northern California.
