It’s National Read a Book Day! What book are you reading today?

I’m doing a reread of Platform Decay by Martha Wells! It was such a joy to jump back into the world of SecUnit and it’s humans 💕

I really want to get back to my roots and original motivation, encouraging a lifelong love of reading. So we’re starting small with this!

Last Wednesday, August 12th, was the 5 year anniversary of when I started making crochet bookmarks! It all started with this first ghost bookmark 👻💕

I am absolutely awed at how much love my little creations have garnered over those 5 years. It has been an incredible journey and I’m so glad that you all chose to join me.

How do we feel about stitch markers?

I’ve had the idea to turn my bookmark tops into stitch markers for a while but this is the first time I’ve actually tried it.

I think it worked pretty well, though I definitely need a different photo setup for them.

They’re made with 10mm lever backs, so they should work for both crochet and knitting!

🦝 All hail Jimothy!!! 🦝

I’ve modified my cat bookmark a few times before to make different animals and I just couldn’t resist making a raccoon after seeing how cute Jimothy is 🥺

This was my third try, scroll to the end to see how it compares to the first and second attempts. I’m still not 100% happy with it so perhaps I’ll give it another try in the future.

👀 Let there be eyes!!! 👀

As requested, this cute little crochet octopus bookmark now has eyes! It does definitely make it look more defined, thank you all for the feedback.

This is also a good illustration of how different yarns, even using the same line, pattern, and hook, will produce different results. The blue octopus is a bit smaller, but the arms look much different than on the original coral color.

Handmade things are just that—handmade. They aren’t cookie cutter molded in a factory where you can make 10 million that all look exactly the same. Each handmade item is unique!

Have you ever had a task that you just kept putting off, even though it wasn’t difficult?

This is the board where I keep my stock of certain bookmarks and it had been empty since November of last year.

When I holiday prep, I only make the tops. I add the string and tassel later, since they’re easier to store without. But I was so busy with the holiday rush last winter that I could never find the time to add the strings and tassels and store them on the board.

Even once I got less busy and would have had the time, I just kept putting it off, adding a string and tassel to a top as I needed them. The tops just sat in a cup on my desk 😂

I finally sat down and got them all finished and man, I forgot how much I love the look of this board when it’s full! (More than full, there’s a stack of random bookmarks at the back that doesn’t fit, I might need to find a new storage method 😅🤣)

In the immortal words of Brennan Lee Mulligan “It’s pride, bitch!” 🌈

It’s been a while since I’ve done paper embroidery and this idea hit me this morning so I just had to roll with it! I’m not sure I’ve ever shared my paper embroidery here, it’s just a hobby and it’s going to stay that way, but this was too cute not to share.

This was by far my most complex embroidered bookmark so far. Usually I have more of the elements as drawings. It took about 4 1/2 hours from start to finish and it was totally worth it.

I’ve had creative block for over a year and when I do get inspired, I often put it off because other things are what I’m “supposed” to be working on. But by the time everything else is done, the inspiration is gone even if I still remember the idea. So it was very nice to just immediately sit down today and get lost in the process of creating.

I hope pride month treated you all well, being truly yourself is more important now than ever and I wish for that courage to follow you throughout the rest of the year! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Can I interest you in a delicious slice of pepperoni pizza? 🍕🍕🍕

My dad mentioned that a pizza slice bookmark would be cute and thus after much prototyping the pepperoni pizza crochet bookmark has been born!

It’s easy to forget that designing new things is a process and you won’t get it exactly right on the first try. Well, I tried… many times 😅
