James Crumley was a first-rate American writer, and he explored the American West and its mythology as well as anyone, its damaged people, its land, its drug and booze filled antics.
His high caliber crime novels listed above are for anyone who likes their fiction tough and tenacious, funny, violent, and at many times poetic.
Damn, he could write.

"There was a time. It didn't start with the Vietnam War, and it didn't quit just because we did. Maybe it started with Elvis mumbling something to Ed Sullivan, and maybe it ended with the Arabs squeezing our nuts at the gas pumps. But somewhere in there, I swear, there was a time when we were free. Our choices were our own, and they seemed important. Black was beautiful, fat was funny, and hairy legs mingled when love was free."
"But that was then and this is now. The insidious forces of oppression have taken a form we never would have guessed."

He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it.

"I want to thank him for the life we shared."

Finnish poet and translator, Maire Saaritsa Hansard, gave an emotional speech at the funeral of her husband, Glen Hansard, yesterday at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. She then read a small early poem she had written for him, in return for the songs he had written for her.

Come to me with beauty. I require
it to stay alive.

I'm not talking of precious gifts, nor do I want a dolled-up, dutiful
and well-assessed array of tender
words.

Hurl the clash of what you've
pocketed from this day at my feet,
and then be brave enough to look
me in the eye.

Push the boundary of two minds
till it stretches, till there are two
bodies in one embrace, and a
moment of understanding or
acceptance, or blind faith, and a
sense of the infinite jump and jive-
that to me is beauty, and I require it
to stay alive.

Death in the Afternoon.
Ernest Hemingway.
New York, NY: Scribners (1932)

Hardback. First Edition.

Near Fine. Very Good, clean dust jacket. Slight bump to top corner of boards. Some chipping to spine of jacket. Overall, a nice copy.

Ernest Hemingway's classic exploration of the history and pageantry of bullfighting, and the deeper themes of cowardice, bravery, sport and tragedy that it inspires. Still considered one of the best books ever written about bullfighting, Death in the Afternoon reflects Hemingway's belief that bullfighting was more than mere sport. Here he describes and explains the technical aspects of this dangerous ritual, and "the emotional and spiritual intensity and pure classic beauty that can be produced by a man, an animal, and a piece of scarlet serge draped on a stick." Seen through his eyes, bullfighting becomes an art, a richly choreographed ballet, with performers who range from awkward amateurs to masters of great grace and cunning.

A fascinating look at the history and grandeur of bullfighting, Death in the Afternoon is also a deeper contemplation on the nature of cowardice and bravery, sport and tragedy, and is enlivened throughout by Hemingway's pungent commentary on life and literature.

On the wall in my book office.

A signed poster for Jeffrey Lent's beautifully written and masterful debut novel, In The Fall. One of my prized items in the collection.

Set in Vermont it is the three generational story of Union soldier Norman Pelham and the woman he has fallen in love with, a runaway slave Leah, who return to farm that land and raise a family, in spite of the differences in color that will affect their lives, but always bound by a deep abiding love.
“Jeffrey Lent’s In the Fall is an extraordinary first novel which bears no resemblance to a first novel. Lent has the absolute mastery to create his own reality. It is a fulsome and harrowing tale and I cannot recommend it highly enough.”--Jim Harrison, author of Legends of the Fall and The River Swimmer
