Much of the country is still in planting season for bearded iris, which means soil preparation is part of the process.
The good news? Iris are fairly adaptable. They thrive in most well-drained garden soils and prefer a pH around 6.8, but they can tolerate some variation.
So, do you need to test your soil?
Not necessarily. But a soil test is especially helpful if you're considering adding amendments to change your soil's pH or improve its condition. Testing first means you can correct what actually needs correcting instead of guessing.
Home soil test kits are available at many garden centers. For a more thorough analysis, check with your local county extension office -testing is often free or low-cost.
And remember: good drainage is one of the most important parts of preparing a planting site for iris.🌱
