On this day in 1999, AFI released their fourth studio album, Black Sails in the Sunset, via Nitro Records. The album marked the band’s first release to feature their current lineup.

Blending hardcore punk intensity with gothic atmosphere and melodic sensibility, Black Sails in the Sunset became a defining turning point in AFI’s sound. Across its 12 tracks, the band expanded beyond their earlier style, embracing darker textures, memorable hooks, and a more emotionally charged approach to songwriting. That evolution can be heard in the menacing “Malleus Maleficarum,” the blistering pace of “Porphyria,” and the dramatic opener “Strength Through Wounding.” At the same time, tracks like “Clove Smoke Catharsis” and the powerful ballad “God Called in Sick Today” showcased a more vulnerable side of the band, with Davey Havok delivering some of his most emotional vocal performances.
