The Golden Rule of Dating: Start With Coffee
Biggest dating mistake I have made thus far is having dinner for a first date. That date, hands down, has been the worst one I've ever been on. I showed up first, and on time (first red flag), but since he hadn't arrived yet, I sat at the bar and grabbed a Margarita. Once he got there, we sat down for dinner and that's when I feel like I Iost 5 years of my life. He talked THE ENTIRE time about himself and how he does security for celebrities and then spent the date name dropping who all he's done security for. I did not get asked ONE SINGLE QUESTION.
I understand people can be nervous talkers but this was like something I had never experienced before. I don't remember saying much the entire conversation and instead did my weird "Oh, wow, that's interesting" response to everything he said. It was NOT interesting and I'm not sure why my brain could only say that sentence. I even started annoying myself!
But I felt like I had been kidnapped and I was being forced to play nice and have dinner with my captor. Let's just say there was NOT a second date and I realized very quickly that there wouldn't be one when I found myself tuning him out and going through the checklist of all the things I could be doing in that moment.
From now on; I'm starting ALL dates with a quick coffee. It's not so much about the coffee, I mean I drink it but I'm not an addicted coffee lover. It's that it takes some of the pressure off of both parties. It's a quick, simple, no frills date that can be over fairly quickly if there's no connection or can be extended to lunch or even dinner if you find yourselves wanting to continue the conversation. Starting with a coffee date is starting off small with the possibility of bigger things to come.
