I’m 31 years old and have lived in San Diego since I was 18. I became an anarchist communist when I was 17, and volunteered for several years at Groundwork Books, a radical bookstore cooperative on campus that serves as one of my biggest inspirations for starting North Star.

Participation in Groundwork and the Che Cafe at UCSD is what started the last ten years of my involvement with left-wing groups.

I’m currently a member of San Diego IWW (Industrial Workers of the World), Degenderettes (a genderq***r feminist agitprop club), the Peace and Freedom Party, and DSA (Democratic Socialists of America).

Over the years I was also part of Redneck Revolt, also called John Brown Gun Club, as well as CLAW (Collective Liberation Anarchist Wave).

I love being part of different groups that I can help bring closer together for the sake of better community defense and solidarity. ✊🏴❤

Revolutionary Black GIs in San Diego

North Star coop will be releasing a brand new Zine in honor of Black August called “Revolutionary Black GIs In San Diego”, written by me!

This zine is a study of the revolutionary, predominantly black, Active Duty organizations that were founded in SD, who opposed the Vietnam war.

They mobilized thousands of active duty personnel in support of a better world and gave a revolutionary perspective rooted in the marxist analysis of the Black Panther Party.

🌟Worker-Owner Spotlight: Jonathan Chavez🌟

I’m 30 years old, a Marine Corps veteran, and a graduate of UCSD with almost a decade of organizing and activist experience. I became a socialist while in the Marine Corps after learning about the crimes of the US empire and realizing we need a change in our society, away from capitalism.

I’ve been a part of several organizations throughout my time organizing in the community, such as Students for Socialism at UCSD, United Students Against Sweatshops Local 619 at UCSD, Tenant Councils San Diego, the Democratic Socialists of America - San Diego, and am currently in the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Peace and Freedom Party, About Face: Veterans Against the War, and the Executive Board of Veterans for Peace Local 91.

I’m so excited to be a part of North Star Cooperative. Hope to see you all around!

📚 Axis of Empire Reading Group w/Schedule! 🗓️

North Star Cooperative, with Veterans For Peace - San Diego, About Face - San Diego, and the Degenderettes, are putting on a reading group with the new book “Axis of Empire: A History of Iran–US Relations”. It covers the last 200 years of history between the US and Iran.

This book is so important given the war on Iran, we all need to study together to understand why the US is constantly targeting this country and how we can resist this war of aggression against the Iranian people.

Our Reading group will have 4 sessions, each on a Friday:

- August 21st at 6pm-7:30
- August 28th at 6pm-7:30
- September 11th at 6pm-7:30
- September 18th at 6pm-7:30

We will meet at the San Diego Liberation Center (810 L Ave, National City)

If you want to purchase the book from North Star for the reading group, we are still offering a 20% discount on the book! So please register if you want to receive a discount on the book.
