♾️ Vibrancy ♾️
I used to avoid social media in April. It felt like never-ending waves of “autism awareness” as if we were magical creatures you couldn’t see unless you knew about us, or a never-ending cavalcade “autism warning signs I wish I’d known” videos posted by autism warrior parents as if it were something to be avoided. While I recognize the difficulty that comes with raising a neurodivergent child and I have no wish to dismiss someone else’s lives experience, it felt very much like April was about how autism affected other people, rather than how autism affected autistic individuals.
In truth, I want more. I want more for my children and every other autistic child. I want more for every autistic adult who has spent their whole lives looking for why they were never enough. I want more from society, to see us as a vibrant, vital part of our communities rather than something to be pitied or easily slotted into a theme of the month only to be erased at the turn of the new.
I want to see expressions of autistic vibrancy, joy, success and everyday life, not heart-jerking insta reels of how a mother wished they’d seen the “signs” earlier. We are more than likes and shares on a social media platform. We deserve more. We deserve better.
