Hard water is a familiar reality for millions of Americans. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, 85 percent of American homes have problems with hard water. Exactly how hard your water is will vary depending on where you live. Hard water is caused by groundwater dissolving and carrying away minerals, most often calcium, magnesium and iron, from rock. When hard water comes in contact with heating elements or hot surfaces, it forms “scale” that builds up and shortens the life of water-using appliances like your water heater. Hard water also leaves deposits on your plumbing fixtures, tubs, sinks, dishes, silverware and glassware that are virtually impossible to clean. With hard water, soaps and detergents aren’t rinsed completely away, leaving a soap residue in your tub and shower (bathtub ring), on your laundry and even on you. Water softeners remove the hardness minerals and some forms of iron. The water softener systems are pressurized water conditioning devices. These systems force hard water through a bed of ion exchange media for the purpose of exchanging the objectionable calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium ions. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of plumbing.

Water softeners are rated in terms of grains of capacity. This capacity measurement refers to the ability of the unit to remove the stated number of grains of hardness from a supply of water. The capacity of a water softener depends on the amount of salt used to regenerate it, plus a variety of other design factors such as regeneration flow rates.
