You may stop DRIVING. You don't stop being YOU.

As a notary, I try to impress upon people how important it is to maintain a current valid ID even after they stop driving.

I accompanied a gentleman to a car dealership to sell his car after he and his wife had stopped driving. When it came time to receive his check, the dealership couldn't release it because his driver's license had expired. Additional steps to obtain a valid identification were required because he had let his license expire. In the end, the transaction and his money were delayed for a week.

On another occasion, I accompanied a woman to her bank. She was unable to withdraw money from her own account because her driver's license had expired and she did not have another form of identification.

Giving up driving doesn't mean giving up the need for ID. You still need valid identification to cash a check, have documents notarized, receive certain prescriptions, visit a doctor or hospital, vote in certain circumstances, and handle many other everyday transactions.

When my grandmother (who is now 97) was in her mid-80s, my mother began attending doctor’s appointments with her. At that time, my mother shared her frustration with me about how the doctors she encountered were so dismissive of my grandmother’s concerns. I heard my mother, but I did not HEAR my mother. Fast forward. Now that my team and I attend doctor’s appointments with many of our clients who are in their mid-80s and and 90s, I experience firsthand what my mother did. Qualities, such as, compassion, empathy, patience and genuine concern which one would expect to be commonplace are not common at all. Seeing this led my team and I to create “Best in Care” two years ago. Attending appointments with our clients puts us in a unique position to not only observe the doctor’s or medical professional’s interaction with his or her patient, but we are also privy to our client’s impressions and follow up information. All of this is taken into account when we select our Best in Care. We applaud and thank those on our list for listening, caring, seeing and treating their patients.

Yesterday, I was surprised for my birthday. Today, I got to surprise someone else for her birthday. One of my usual partners in caring and I surprised one of our dear clients for her 80th birthday. A big thank you to the folks at Clyde's Willow Creek Farm for helping Cayce and I took make this a birthday to remember.

A few months ago, someone left a hard copy of this article on my desk in my office at The Care Concierge LLC with a note that read "you guys should do this." I read the article and thought "we DO do this." While The Care Concierge LLC offers a number of services, one that many find comforting is our Appointment Companion service. We go to a doctor's appointment with our client, complete forms or Ipad registration and sit with the client. Some clients have us go into the exam room with him or her. No company can exist without an awesome team. I am so fortunate to have the BEST team. There are five of us but three of us often work in same location and get to spend a lot of time together. This weekend we were able to do an overnight retreat. Lots of food and lots of laughs. I hope the rest of the team can join us next year!

Moving can be stressful and overwhelming at any age but especially when you have been blessed with longevity and are in your early 80 or 90s. Today, I attended a presentation JK Moving Services. An interesting point was made. When people move later in life, it is often because of a life event such as change in health, an injury or the death of a spouse.
