Ever feel like putting pompoms on EVERYTHING? Yeah, me too. I want to decorate my clothes in a way that is bright, happy and doesn’t make it too hard to wash. My method of making pompoms is fun and creates a durable, 3D pompom you can put on just about anything. Learn the Faux Chenille technique for making layered, fuzzy textures and design your own bucket hat. This workshop requires a beginner level of experience on a sewing machine.

New class at Cazadero Performing Arts Family Camp this year!! Inspired by my friend Harumo Sato’s cardboard collaborations with her kid, we developed a mask-making class based around the Tokusatsu film genre in Japan- think Godzilla and practical effects. Our class of 6-11 year olds spent 5 days building a cardboard base, adding 3D elements, painting and putting on finishing details with paper. We collaborated with a singing class to make a parade from the theatre performance down to the rock band stage, singing and dancing with over 100 people. The band leader for the Parliament Funkadelic class wore one of the masks during their performance!! It was dreamy. It was a lot of work but the kids came through and made a scene no one will forget. 🩷🦖🔥

SUNDAY August 30- SEWING WORKSHOP!

Link in Bio - Register through FOUND*SJ

English Paper Piecing (EPP) is a patchwork technique for quilting and applique that uses small paper templates to piece together your fabric. Wrap your fabric around the paper templates temporarily and stitch or glue in place. The template creates a clear, sharp line for each seam. Once several templates are wrapped and secured, you can begin attaching the seams with a whip- or ladder-stitch. Once all edges of once shape have been sewn to others, the paper can be removed. It’s a great scrap buster, requires very little in terms of tools and is highly portable. This is wonderful for crafters with little room for storage. It’s so easy and small, you can do it on the bus or train while traveling.

This 2-hour workshop includes all materials. We will go over the basics of creating the templates for EPP and how to put them together. I will also demonstrate how sewists can create their own quilt block free-hand using this method. We will work together to finish a beautiful 8-piece pincushion.

This workshop will be held just down the road from my studio at Found SJ at 57 Barack Obama Blvd in San Jose. It runs 2 hours and all materials are provided.

Inspired by the exhibits at Crystal Bridges, my sister and I continued our summer tradition of cicada exoskeleton sculpture. We spent a lot of time at the Keith Haring exhibit and learned about his friend and co-artist Kenny Sharf- the bedazzled boom boxes were my favorite things that day. We also visited the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Room, a first time for Laura. She gathered the cicada husks from her backyard and we slowly painted them, adding glitter and small rhinestones. I used a toothpick to make the small details such as Haring’s line style and Kusama’s universe of dots. YAYOI KUSAMA MUSEUM Kenny Scharf Keith Haring Foundation Paxton Gate San Francisco

Looking for an easy beginner sewing project? from 100 Acts of Sewing is a three-piece shirt is perfect- pair it with a Sewing Consultation and I can help you through it. The only tricky-ish part is adding bias tape around the neckline, but you can buy that if you don’t want to make it. This is from designer Sonya Philips, from the Bay Area! I’ve made a dozen of these- there’s a lot you can do with it. (The second pic is me getting my hair caught in the tree.)
