A few moments from Japan 🇯🇵

Sitting here from my sofa in Scotland its crazy to think just a few days ago we were across the world in Japan. We can't wait to get writing on Ed.21 once we've had some rest 🌎❤️

Japan, over and out… for now! 🇯🇵

One whole month here, and our first time in Japan. We’ve learnt so much, immersed ourselves in a new culture and met craftspeople working across so many different disciplines. Spending time in their workshops and hearing their stories has given us a much better understanding of craft here.

We’re looking forward to taking some time to reflect on this trip and working through ALL the stories we’ve captured. Many, many notes, so many recordings and thousands upon thousands of images 🤣

We’re so thankful to everyone who helped make this trip possible, and to the makers who opened their doors to us and spent hours talking with us. We’ve been made to feel so welcome, and we’re excited to share their stories with you.

There’s far too much to say right now. We fly home tomorrow, although getting all the way home will probably take us about three days 🤣 🇯🇵🌍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We love what we do, and we’re so glad we get to do it together as a husband-and-wife team….What a month ❤️

Sometimes you meet people who don’t seem to realise just how wonderful they are.

Today we met Matsumi, a woodblock printer who lives in a 120-year-old house on the outskirts of Hida Takayama. It took us two and a half hours, one train, one bus and one taxi to get there, and we had such a lovely welcome.

Matsumi has been practising her craft for 30 years. We chatted about her story and discovered just how much work she had in her home, with an upstairs gallery full of her prints. We were so taken aback!

She said that out of all the amazing woodblock artists in Japan, we had come to see her. Well, of course! Her work is wonderful, everyone has a unique story, and we were very happy to hear hers.

One of the things we love about doing this is getting to experience different cultures and hear about people’s lives. We’re always asked what we think of the different places we visit, and makers are so excited to hear about other people making things in different parts of the world. It’s lovely to be able to share those stories with the people we meet, too.

Makers in rural communities don’t always get the exposure they deserve. There is so much work, skill and experience in places like Matsumi’s home, and we feel very lucky to be welcomed in and able to share a little of it with you next year ❤️

You know when you spend time with people who just light you up? That was today! 💙

We met Naoko & Kota Omae and what a pair! So full of energy, enthusiasm and completely in love with what they do - it was infectious.

We’ve met some incredible people during our time in Japan, but days like today really remind us why we love doing what we do.

A huge thank you to Andrea and Kunito of Kominka Collective for introducing us, and for looking after us this past week.

We’ve still got a few days left together, but we’ve been completely immersed in Japanese craft, meeting the people behind it and learning so much along the way.

I don’t think we’ve quite processed everything we’ve experienced yet! 📝📸

Erica Moody was encouraged towards academia. Her good grades were seen as a reason to keep her out of vocational trades....

Erica Moody was encouraged towards academia. Her good grades were seen as a reason to keep her out of vocational trades. She tried academia, but didn't care for it much. A chance encounter at a Boston garden party introduced her to work she could connect with. Some years later, she built a business of considerable size doing what she loved: metalwork. Before scaling it down at her own volition to build something that better served her and her interest as a craftswoman.

Craft exists everywhere, and we are here to prove it. We all see beautifully shot documentaries and photos of incredible craftspeople from all around the world. But what about your own city, town, or village? What craftspeople exist there? What are they making?

We are building a massive map-based directory to bring you closer to the craftspeople of the world to join in the immense joy we have experienced stumbling across a workshop somewhere totally unexpected, sometimes even local.

Sheffield has been on our list for some time, largely for its density of makers and craftspeople and its history as a key part of the Industrial Revolution.

With deadlines looming, we knew this visit would be too short, though just sweet enough to get a flavour of the city. We actively sought out the lesser-talked-about side of Sheffield craft – three women operating in distinctly non-Sheffield synonymous crafts. Whilst Alex, the third of our guest writers and contributors, visited Jeff Durber, a pocket knife maker whose work he has carried personally for some twenty years.
