This is an email I sent to the radio station below. I thought you would also like to read my thoughts on the matter

WIN 104.9 morning radio host… I apologize for not knowing your name

I heard you talking about your butterfly bush issues this morning on the radio. You expressed how they keep dying every winter and that you had planted it to create a butterfly garden.

Big box stores and local nurseries/landscapers sell it because that’s what everyone thinks they need when in all actuality this is untrue. A lot of them know that they will die in the winter and not all of them will inform you of this due to them profiting from the sales of said shrub. Some of them are also uneducated about native plants or just straight up don’t care.

Butterfly bush are quickly becoming an invasive plant in the southern states. They provide no nutrients for our local pollinators. This plant isn’t even from our country. It originates from China. It is not a host plant for any species of native insect, butterfly or moth in the United States.

The best plants to plant for local pollinators (moths, butterflies, bees, wasps, flies etc) are plants native to Indiana and the Midwest. This is because they have evolved together for thousands of years. They were made for each other.

Lucky for you I specialize in native plants. All plants sold by me were grown by businesses in Indiana. I don’t have the manpower to grow the plants but I have found reputable suppliers to purchase them from.

You can email me back or find me on Facebook if you would like to discuss this further.

Thank you for your time!
