Big Sam has been busy lately.
Some of my customers asked if I could create larger versions of one of some of my original designs, so that's exactly what has been taking over the laser lately.

This piece will finish at 20" x 16" - basically double the size that I bring to shows. It's been so much fun seeing these designs at this scale.

I will have this one assembled soon... and I can't wait to share the finished piece.

It's been a little quiet over here because I've been buried in custom orders and building inventory.

Sometimes the work isn't glamorous - it's sanding, painting, staining, waiting for glue to dry, and starting over when something doesn't come out right.

But I wouldn't trade creating with my hands for anything.

Social media has taken a back seat while I worked through orders, but I'm excited to start sharing more of what happens behind the scenes again.

Sometimes running a small business means being an expert problem solver.

This weekend I got a late night phone call from the show organizers that every vendor dreads... the wind was taking my canopy despite being it weighed down with over 300lbs of weights.

I rushed back to the showground and what followed was a frantic race to get the canopy down, save the fixtures, and keep everything from blowing away... in the dark and wind and rain.

I was convinced my canopy was toast.

But, the show organizers were incredible - not only did they help get everything down, they loaned me some of their canopies so I could still participate in the show. Their kindness turned what could have been a disaster into a successful weekend.

This wasn't the first canopy I've lost... and I'm sure it won't be the last.

We saved the last damaged one - just in case.

And I'm so glad! There were enough parts to rebuild and replace the broken bars and leg.

Owning a small business means celebrating victories that most people never see. Today, this was mine.

Now it's time to get back to creating.

The reveal: Sea Turtle! 🐢

While many Aspen Owl designs are inspired by forests, lakes, and wildlife closer to home, I've always had a soft spot for sea turtles.

In fact, I love them so much that I have one tattooed on my arm.

There's something about them that feels both ancient and peaceful as they move through the water with such grace and purpose.

This layered wood design was especially fun to create because each layer adds depth and movement, bringing a little piece of the ocean to life.

Woke up to the first order from the Boundary Waters Collection this morning
This series feels especially personal to me because it’s inspired by my own photos and experiences in the Boundary Waters - a place that has brought me peace, inspiration, and perspective for years.

Thank you so much for supporting handmade art, this new collection, and the partnership with Save the Boundary Waters.

For years, the Boundary Waters has been one of the places that resets my soul. The quiet. The water. The sunsets that somehow never look real.

This piece was created from that feeling - a calm evening paddle as the light fades across the lake.

It’s also the beginning of a new series inspired by my own Boundary Waters photos and experiences.

I’m incredibly excited to share that proceeds from this piece will be donated to Save the Boundary Waters to help protect and preserve the wilderness that inspired this design.

Working on something really special this week.

I’ve started turning some of my own Boundary Waters photographs into layered wood art pieces inspired by places that mean a lot to me.
