🌙 Looking for a creative way to spend an afternoon?
Join us at the Sheboygan Visitor Center & Gifts for Night Skies in Watercolor with local artist Cindy Sarkady!

During this relaxed watercolor class, Cindy will guide participants through creating a peaceful nighttime scene filled with glowing skies, stars, moonlight, and the soft colors of daybreak.
Whether you’re brand new to watercolor or have been painting for years, this class is a chance to slow down, try something new, and create your own piece of art.

All supplies are provided, and you’re welcome to bring your own brushes and paints if you’d like. Feel free to bring a couple reference photos, too!

🦈 Shark Week + Sheboygan Fun Fact!

Sharks in Lake Michigan? Not exactly… but Wisconsin has had one famous shark tale!

In 1969, Milwaukee fishermen discovered what looked like a small shark floating in the lake. The mystery didn’t last long; it turned out to be a frozen shark caught in Florida, placed there as a prank by a local tavern owner and his friends. The idea started as a joke and “grew and grew” as the drinks kept coming. 🍻

So while you won’t need to worry about sharks while enjoying Lake Michigan, you can take home a shark souvenir!

Books, books, book! 📖

And one of my posts wouldn’t be complete without a fun fact of Sheboygan:

“The year 1847 was also recorded to have been one of the coldest on record. Sheboygan County experienced frost in every month of that year.”

So come in to the Sheboygan Visitor Center and Gifts and check out our collection of books and learn more fascinating history on Sheboygan. And celebrate when the first printing press was brought to Sheboygan for Sheboygan’s first newspaper, Sheboygan Mercury.

Interestingly, the same year that was the coldest on record – 1847. At least Sheboyganites had something to read during that frigid year!

🍞 Everyone's heard the phrase, "the best thing since sliced bread." But did you know Sheboygan helped pave the way for sliced bread?
In 1910, Sheboygan inventor Herman Hayssen patented the first automatic bread-wrapping machine, making it possible to package loaves quickly, cleanly, and efficiently. His invention launched the Hayssen Manufacturing Company and helped transform the baking industry.
Here's the best part: sliced bread wasn't introduced until 18 years later! Without reliable bread wrapping, those perfectly sliced loaves would have gone stale much faster.
Looks like Sheboygan was the best thing before sliced bread. 😉🍞
We think that calls for a Wisconsin-shaped cutting board and a little local cheese 🧀 Or maybe with a locally made tomato basil soup!

We're closed today while our team helps with Freedom Fest festivities, but our self-service foyer is open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM if you need maps, brochures, or information about local attractions.

🇺🇸 Holiday Hours Reminder
The Visit Sheboygan Visitor Center & Gift Shop will be closed this Saturday, July 4, as our staff assists with Freedom Fest activities.
If you're looking for Sheboygan souvenirs or visitor information, be sure to stop in and see us today or tomorrow!
As always, our self-service foyer is open daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, where you can pick up maps, brochures, and information about local attractions and events.

Did you know the Sheboygan Lighthouse burned down?

Sheboygan's lighthouse has quite the history! The original lighthouse was built on North Point in 1839, but shoreline erosion threatened the structure, so a replacement was built in 1860. As Sheboygan's harbor continued to grow, a pierhead lighthouse was added in 1873, only to be destroyed by fire just seven years later. It was quickly rebuilt and, as the harbor expanded, the lighthouse was moved farther out on the pier multiple times before finally being relocated to its current home on the north breakwater in 1915, over 600 feet from where it started.
Today, the Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation and one of our city's most recognizable landmarks. Next time you take a walk along the lakefront, you're looking at nearly two centuries of maritime history! 🌊
