Morning …! Let’s Get This Day Started 🙂

This was written by someone else.Jad to Share ..! Running a business is really hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people.
People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.
Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.
You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.
Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a husband or a wife, family support, friend...
There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5-10 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.
Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support one another.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually introduced myself, admittedly I like to stay behind the scenes and let the furniture do the talking buuut I think it’s time to change that.

I’m Desiree, the owner of and one woman show that is Stay Awhile Home. While I do run things (scary thought and if you’re a fellow adhd person, you get it) I have a great support system in my family, they’ve all chipped in at some point with moving, storing, or scoring free curbside treasures for me. My dog, Cash, is technically my only full time employee but his job description states “be cute and avoid any actual work” so…

This venture started about 8 years ago, I purchased my first home and found myself decorating on a budget which led to a completely unexpected DIY adventure turned small business. I got my decorating gene from my grandmother (and still scope out her house every time I visit for inspiration) part of that involves shuffling and redecorating often so my house became a revolving door of furniture scored on Craigslist, or later, marketplace, that I would refinish to suit my taste.

I randomly decided to set up a booth at Reinvintage Home’s pop up market (back at the cabin, so it’s been a minute!) and at the end of the day, Terry agreed to take my remaining pieces on consignment including the infamous blue desk. Since then I have sold on consignment, shared a booth space with Tiffany of Rustic615, and now I’m back to selling on consignment at Reinvintage and maintain a booth at Yesterday’s Treasures in Shelbyville. Most recently, I became a retailer for DIY Paint which was a scary but super exciting step for me.

When I’m not painting furniture, or at my full time job as a nursing assistant, I’m drooling over furniture I really don’t have space for or buying plants I also don’t have space for. I have a YouTube channel and am working on adding more content that shares my trial-and-error hard earned knowledge on the off chance anyone else is looking for a new obsession, because furniture refinishing and crafting is addicting. If you’re on YouTube, I’d love if you’d subscribe and join me for paint and other crafting related shenanigans. I’m also on IG and Tik Tok as Stay Awhile Home.
