Another great month of reading! I was definitely in my “women power throughout history” era 😂

Highlights & notes:

🐦 The Calamity Club blew me AWAY. So well written and funny while clearly communicating an important message. I recommend on audio - the narrators are great. Definitely in the running for favorite book of 2026.

⚛️ Lessons in Chemistry was so clever, humorous and also had a great message. Wait til you meet Six-Thirty. A must-read.

🫖 The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion vol 3. These just keep getting better and I’m going to “allow” myself to read two volumes this month (trying to savor them 🤣)

🔪 Mad Mabel - our book club pick this month did not disappoint. While not your typical thriller, this one had my emotions and interest piqued from the beginning! So layered and a beautiful story.

🚂 The Midnight Train was a thoughtful take on revisiting one’s life choices & determining what, if anything, should have been different.

🍳 The Mad Wife taught me SO much about a moment in women’s history that I knew very little of. Troubling, suspenseful, and very raw. Check trigger warnings.

⌨️ Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone was unlike anything I’ve ever read. Clever and entertaining, if a bit silly. Apparently there’s a screen version coming to HBO!

🗡️ Throne of Glass and The Astral Library really didn’t do it for me. I think you have to buy into the fantasy world and I didn’t in either case. Both had good moments, though.

Which ones have you read? What was your take?

Happy reading! 📚

August picks have dropped! In honor of back to school month, these titles with school settings are now available on the shelf at Fretwell :

Society of Lies by Lauren Ling Brown
A Reese’s Book Club pick, this story set at Princeton follows Maya who finds herself trying to solve her sister Naomi’s suspicious death. What was meant to be a lovely reunion weekend celebrating Naomi’s graduation and seeing old friends turns into a nightmare of uncovering long buried secrets of an exclusive social club.

The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
The first in a series of three (soon to be four!) bestselling Romantasy novels, enter the world of Basgiath: an elite war college with dragons, gauntlets, & daily brushes with death. It is hard not to root for the main character, a physically frail & most unlikely student of the most challenging Quadrant of the school. Everyone has an agenda because there are only two ways out: rise above the class & graduate, or die.

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides
Mariana finds herself back at Cambridge to comfort her niece Zoe after her best friend at school is found dead. Mariana immediately suspects Edward Fosca, a professor of Greek Tragedy who is handsome, charismatic & seemingly untouchable. In her efforts to prove him to be a murderer, she risks losing her credibility, relationships, and even her life. I loved the tie-in to The Silent Patient.

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
As a P.h.D. candidate, Olive is too focused and too serious to believe in romantic relationships. To appease her best friend and prove she’s not on her way to old maid status, Olive daringly kisses the first man she sees. The man, Adam, just so happens to be a young, attractive professor at the school, and also an epic ass. In this fake-dating trope, find out if a hypothesis on love is worth the possible combustion.

Find these and other titles about or set in Academia throughout the month of August 🍎🤓🏫📚

Last call for the two remaining July featured books:

Seven Days in June by Tia Williams
A love story of reconnection and trust that’s as humorous as it is sensual. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads

A magical realism romance that defies reason and time. Nominee for Goodreads Favorite Romance & over ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating.
