Rivers of Life

General James Forlong’s chart in his great 1883 work - Rivers of Life, Or, Sources and Streams of the Faiths of Man in All Lands

As an inveterate book collector and book lover, this work is one that got away, and which I’ve always regretted.

Many years ago, I missed my opportunity to purchase the original edition of this monumental work. The asking price was $300, and back then, I was young and money was tight (as it was for all of us, and still is for everyone starting out in life with a young family). I knew it was worth every penny! Why? Because General Forlong was applying archeological and scientific analysis to dates and periods of events.

Over the years, as my means increased, I recreated my father’s collection of books that I grew up with (and sadly left behind - it is scattered now, given away, lost or borrowed and never returned) then greatly expanded it - my basement is wall to wall bookshelves filled with books - many are rare and old publications.

But this book never left my mind. Copies are still available but the original edition is now $2500-$3500 depending on condition. Luckily, it’s in the public domain now so you can find digital versions and reprints.

Let’s take a deep breath. The frenzy and constant din of the Election news cycles is finally behind us.

Gather yourself….look at the beauty around you again. Touch a flower, feel the texture of a leaf, work the rough dry soil with your bare hands.. Breathe the pure, cold Fall air…. It’s good to be alive.

Good morning.. happy Saturday!

These 2 prints (and more) can be viewed at the The Avenue ArtHouse now. It’s a great place to visit with friendly staff and fun resident artists who are so helpful and ready to share their knowledge and experience.

If you’re lucky you may also run into some of the guest artists whose works are in display… and have an impromptu discussion about their inspiration and interpretation of their work in an informal setting.

Never a dull moment if Yvonne, Tracey and Helen are around. Ask about their fun classes. Sometimes they have home-made cookies. 😋

The weather is perfect for a drive out there, the Fall colors driving to Louisa are amazing. Mother Nature’s palette is incomparable.

These are from my ‘Tie-Dye’ series of prints based on the work of Spotsylvania tie-dye artist Natalie Ames. They are large… no getting away from that. The wood frame canvases are 30 inches x 40 inches. Great for a large room, an entrance hallway, an office or even a bedroom. It’s great to have a collection of these pieces to swap out each month and always have your home and office looking bright and fresh. Art should never fade into the background due to being hung for so long that it blends into the background and ceases to attract our attention. Rotating pieces keeps the magic and mystery alive.

Good morning, Happy Sunday!

I’ve been working on a gallery page to showcase individual prints and canvases without the clutter. Please check it out!

Share with friends and family, please. All proceeds after expenses will go to good causes. I’d really like to help out the families and communities impacted by the recent hurricanes… their suffering has no end in sght as they try to rebuild their shattered lives.

If anyone know of a low cost or free venue where I could show some of these large canvases, please let me know. Wall space isn’t necessary, I can display on easels. Or just stack ‘em up and let people flip through. I love the sense of discovery when flipping through a rack of prints or albums and coming upon something that grabs me in a way I never imagined.

I have been working on these prints for a couple of years now… finally found the courage this past year to show them at the Master Gardeners Annual Symposium and at the Annual seed swap. I also got a little space at The Avenue ArtHouse to hang a few pieces, thanks to Kathryn Wettlaufer who keeps encouraging me to get these prints out of my basement. 🤦
