Cosmetic Chemistry Fun Facts, Part 4! 🧪💡

“If it stings or tingles, that just means it’s working!”

We’ve all heard this myth, but discomfort definitely doesn’t equal results.🙅🏼‍♀️

That stinging sensation is usually your skin signaling irritation. It happens commonly with high-percentage actives, chemical exfoliants like AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids like glycolic acid and lactic acid), or retinoids, especially if your skin barrier is already somewhat compromised.

Your daily routine shouldn’t burn or sting. If a strong % of active or retinoid is giving you trouble, try scaling back to a lower percentage or using it fewer days a week.
However, if you’re dealing with persistent redness or stinging every time you apply a product, you should discontinue use.

Ever wonder what gives plants their signature scent profiles?

Terpenes (and terpenoids) are key aromatic compounds responsible for those distinct fragrance notes!

Here are a few common ones you might recognize:
🍋 Limonene (Citrus)
🌱 Menthol (Mint)
🪻 Linalool (Lavender)
🌲 Pinene (woodsy)
🌿 Eucalyptol (Eucalyptus & Rosemary)

But they do more than just smell good… in cosmetic formulations and OTC drugs, specific terpenes have valuable benefits, including antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

If you see a brand claiming their soap or skincare will “cure” or “heal” medical conditions like eczema or psoriasis, run. 🚩

Under US law, cosmetics cannot legally claim to treat or prevent diseases. If a product makes those claims, it’s regulated as a drug, not a cosmetic.

Soap is intended to cleanse your skin, and that’s it 🫧

Fun fact: Traditional soap isn’t even classified as a cosmetic by the FDA! It has its own specific definition and labeling requirements. 🧼
