Imposter syndrome is real, dude 😭

I’m almost finished with my master’s degree, and I still question my knowledge every single day, considerably more than when I only had my bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

I recently learned about the Dunning-Kruger effect, and it changed my outlook on this feeling entirely. 👇

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is a type of cognitive bias where people with little expertise assume they have superior expertise. Which really just sums up the entire internet and social media tbh.

When you’re just starting out, you don’t know enough to realize what you’re missing. The deeper you go into higher education and research, the more you realize how many things you actually have no idea about and how much information is actually available to us.

Have you ever judged a shampoo or body wash by how much lather it makes? 🛁

The truth is, big bubbles and fluffy lather have nothing to do with actual cleaning power of a product. Cleansing happens when surfactants form micelles (groups of molecules that love oils and hate water) to lift away oil and dirt, while foaming is simply surfactants trapping air.

In personal care products, adding foam boosting ingredient is all about sensory satisfaction and making consumers “feel” like something is clean. But bubbles don't lift dirt!

Save this for the next time someone tells you a product "isn't working" because it doesn't foam enough!
