If your kids are anything like mine, they don’t hate writing. They hate pointless writing.

So we turn our writing into books! Full permission to SKIP the perfectionism and let them have fun writing their own stories.

We use the Scribbles to Stories units from Mikaela Martinez • PreK-Kindergarten Project Based Learning to teach the book-making process.

Full permission to skip the perfectionism we’ve built in our brains and let kids just create. No instructions.

LET THEM.
Be bold. Be creative. Be experimental.

Ask one question, then let them be.

Now they’re crafting, and you’re pacing back and forth because of the MESS. I see you. Deep breath.
But I’m so proud of you for letting them figure it out on their own!

Your kid says “I don’t know” about a word they DO know

Most of the time, it’s not that they don’t know it. They just don’t have a first step yet.

Instead of “You know this one!”, say “Say it, tap it, write it.”

This is the method I use with my own kids and my students!

That’s a wrap on our Human Body Unit!

We spent time learning our bodies from head to toe, creating art, crafts, and projects along the way. Then ended our unit with an extra special exhibit for our families. Which provides a chance for our learners to teach what they’ve learned, share their work, and proudly show off their learning space.

Because sometimes the best part of learning is getting to say, “Look what I know”

Have a struggling reader at home?

Maybe they can read the words but struggle to tell you what they just read?

One simple thing I teach my children is to GO BACK into the book.

“Where did you find that?”
“Show me.”
“Go back and look.”

Because knowing how to find the evidence is a skill they can carry in their tool belt far beyond the books they read.

Okay, so here’s what I mean when I say we pay our kids $5 to read.

He reads his book, and then we talk about it.

Questions I always ask:
Who was it about?
What happened?
Where did it happen?
Why did it happen?
What was your favorite part?
What was a good lesson learned in the book?

And if he needs to, he can flip back through the pages. He can look at the pictures, find what happened, and even act it back out. Because I’m not trying to see if he can memorize the story. I want to see if he understands it.

If your child has to look back through the book to answer a question, that does NOT automatically mean they didn’t read it or understand it.

Actually, there’s a reason I WANT my kids to look back.
