The “Survivor Tree” was discovered in the rubble at Ground Zero nearly a month after 9/11 attacks. This Callery Pear tree was badly burned and broken with one branch still alive and little chance for recovery. Removed from the area by NY Parks Department and nursed back to health at a Bronx nursery, the tree returned to the plaza in 2010 and stands as a living reminder of resilience, survival, and rebirth.
But that’s not where the story ends! Because then it had a baby… hundreds of them, in fact! The saplings from the Survivor Tree are donated to three communities each year that have endured tragedies. The Survivor Tree’s daughters are growing in Orlando, Paris, Newtown, Connecticut, San Bernardino, and Las Vegas to name a few. ❤️🌳🇺🇸
