These were built around color and movement. Bright chartreuse silicone legs with black flake give the jig a lot of visibility, while the chenille body adds a completely different texture and profile.

What I like about silicone for a tail is that it doesn’t need much help. Those individual strands separate, pulse and move with very little rod input. Fish it vertically and the legs are still working. Give it a little shake and the whole profile comes alive.

This one isn’t trying to be subtle. Chartreuse, green and black are there to get noticed. Sometimes matching the hatch matters. Sometimes I want something a crappie has absolutely no excuse for overlooking.

On Spot-Lock, a bow-mounted trolling motor will naturally work the boat toward a bow-into-the-wind position as it maintains the GPS location.

Trolling across the wind is a different story and can be tricky to figure out for less experienced boaters.

Now the wind is pushing against the side of the boat while the trolling motor tries to maintain your line. More corrections. More heading changes. Less consistent speed and presentation.

When possible, plan your trolling pass to work into the wind instead of across it.

Better boat control usually means better bait control.

The calendar says fall. The lake may still be running summer software.

Cool mornings and orange leaves can fool anglers faster than fish. Deep water changes more slowly than the air above it, and a lake may remain stratified until surface cooling weakens the temperature difference enough for the water column to mix.

That means “fall” does not automatically mean everything moved shallow.

Watch the surface temperature, look for the thermocline on sonar, track the depth of the bait, and pay attention to where the first few bites actually happen.

Let the lake confirm the season before you commit to a seasonal pattern.

Most anglers judge a jig by how it looks dry. Fish see what it does wet, especially when it stops.

Soft feather materials can continue breathing with very little rod movement. Stiffer hair holds a narrower profile and responds more directly when the jig moves. Flash adds shimmer, but it does not create action by itself.

None is automatically better. They give the fish different looks.

If crappie follow without committing, changing color is only one option. Change what the jig does during the pause.

Bought it years ago. Never produces. Still makes every trip. Occupies prime real estate. Survives every cleanout.

At this point, it is not a lure - it’s a permanent resident.

It has tenure.
