Brain Matters Coffee

Brain Matters Coffee We are a small batch coffee roaster dedicated to dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health, one caffeinated cup at a time. We always roast to order.

We're thoughtful about the green coffees we source because transparency is paramount.

Roasting involves a good bit of physics and chemistry. Heat, mass, time, temperature, variables, convection, conduction, etc. it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the process. I know I do sometimes 🙃. There’s beauty and simplicity to it as well though.

Hot dang; it’s been a minute, hasn’t it? I’ve been a little quiet over here while I adjust to my new job at the coffee shop. I think my favorite part is the people I work with. They’re kind and helpful and protective, and they are what make my job so wonderful. I’m really glad I did that scary thing - applying to a job I didn’t think I was qualified for. So, let me be the one to tell you - try that scary thing you secretly really wanna do - therapy, or a medication that could help you, or skating, or rock climbing, or maybe that job you really want.

A little update: I’ve accepted a position as a barista for a coffee shop here in the San Diego area! I’m extremely excited to learn even more about coffee, and course, be around people. For decades, I thought I was an introvert, but I recently learned that I am actually an ambivert. I need both people and isolation, lol. I am my own worst critic, and I often live in my own head for hours, days even. It’s exhausting to say the least.

Business is still operating as usual around here, it just means my skills are gonna get sharper every day. Thanks for joining me on this journey, folks!

When I first got into coffee, I actually hated espresso. I had to douse it with sugar to be able to drink it 😂. As time went on, I added less and less sugar, and eventually found that espresso can taste sweet on its own!

Our Nostalgia makes for a perfect Fall coffee! It has notes of caramel popcorn, cinnamon, chocolate & there’s a hint of dried berry. It’s my absolute fav right now, and I use it for everything from espresso to pour over and aeropress!

Who here has an ?! I recently started experimenting, and they’re so fun and unbelievably easy to use! If you like strong coffee, I highly recommend trying it out. My current recipe is:

• 15 grams of finely ground coffee (finer than drip)
•225 grams of water at 200 degrees
• brew time is about 1:45

Do you have your own recipes? Lemme know what they are!

I hate imposter syndrome and self doubt. They hit me a lot, and they hit hard.

“What you do doesn’t actually matter.”

“You don’t even know what you’re doing.”

“You aren’t a success.”

“Also, in case you forgot, you’re mediocre at best.”

There are ways to cope with imposter syndrome, like remembering that facts and feelings don’t always align, but sometimes it just washes over you, causing complete immobility.

If imposter syndrome hits you hard too, here are some things to remember:

• Your current version of reality might not actually be true. Separate facts versus feelings.

• Write down a list of what you’re knowledgeable on, and keep it handy.

•Write down your successes. Guess what? You’ve got plenty.

• Tell someone how you’re feeling. We can be our own worst enemies and the brutalist of all.

• Social media makes it look like everyone has it together all the time, and that everyone is a master of what they do. But we’re all just people who want to look like we have it all together, even when we don’t.

Therapy is cool, yeah, but it can also be hard. Really hard. And sometimes it takes time to find a therapist and a type of therapy that works for you.

I’ve been attempting to navigate this system for years, and covid has definitely made it harder. I don’t like teletherapy; it causes more anxiety and disconnect for me. Virtual programs in general have been a source of great stress, but it’s kind of the only option right now, isn’t it? Of course, some folks are operating in person now, but it’s rare. And then there’s the issue of insurance on top of it all.

If you’re having a hard time finding a therapist and a type of therapy that works for you, please know you aren’t alone. I have hope that there’s got to be something out there for everyone. Don’t give up just yet.

As an adult, I don’t much care for spooky season, lol. I don’t like being scared, and I don’t like anything gore. But the one thing I do feel a little nostalgic for is the one day a year where I got to dress up as whatever I wanted. I always felt… free on Halloween. One year I dressed up as Avril Lavigne - I had the look down so perfectly.

But then again, younger me would be stoked to know that current me can dress any which way every single day. So maybe I’m just nostalgic for the massive candy haul 🤪.
