The Boulder River is running very low through the lower stretches, hovering around 75 CFS, but the good news is that water temperatures are still cold and the fish are happy. With these low, cool flows, there are some great hopper opportunities throughout the middle of the day.

Start your morning with nymphs and streamers to pick up fish before the dry-fly bite gets going. As the day warms up, keep an eye on the banks and slower water for fish looking up for terrestrials.

Flies: Royal Wulff, Chubby Chernobyl, Pink Pookie, Frenchie, Prince Nymph, Sparkle Minnow, and Slumpbuster.

The Stillwater River is running low, clear, and plenty cold, and the fishing has been staying consistent. Flows are sitting around 350 CFS, making for some very predictable fish-holding water. Look for fish tucked into riffles, seams, and deeper buckets, with plenty of willing eaters still looking up.

Dry-dropper rigs have been fishing well throughout the day, especially when worked through the usual holding water. Streamers are also worth throwing in the mornings, with fish willing to chase as the water cools and fall settles in.

Flies: Chubby Chernobyl, More or Less Hopper, Purple Haze, Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, Pat’s Rubber Legs, Sparkle Minnow, Krystal Flash Bu**er.

The Yellowstone River has cooled off nicely and is shaping up for some great fall fishing. Flows are sitting around 2,000 CFS in Billings, and fish are still holding in the shallower riffle water. There’s a good hopper-dropper opportunity right now, with plenty of fish willing to move for a well-presented dry.

As nighttime temperatures continue to drop, expect fish to gradually slide back into deeper holding water. Streamer fishing has been good in the mornings and should only continue to improve as we move further into fall. Early starts are worth it if you’re looking to move some bigger fish.

Flies: Chubby Chernobyl, Pink Pookie, Frenchie, Copper John, Pat’s Rubber Legs, Sparkle Minnow, Barely Legal.

Bighorn River fishing has remained excellent throughout the month of August. Flows are still low, hovering around 1,600 CFS, while water temperatures in the middle river have been fluctuating between 50–58°F. The hatch bug season is in full swing, with a mix of black caddis, tan caddis, PMDs, and a few mahoganies making an appearance.

Upper River

Expect to find success nymphing through the morning with small gray or tan sow bugs in sizes 16–20. Small orange scuds in size 16 can also produce early in the day.

As we move into the afternoon and evening, there are excellent opportunities for both nymphing and dry-fly fishing. As you begin seeing adult caddis flying around, switch your bottom nymph to a size 16–18 black caddis pupa. Black caddis dry-fly fishing has also been consistent in the evenings, making for some fun opportunities as fish begin looking toward the surface.

Lower River

The lower river continues to fish exceptionally well, with very active fish in the mid-50°F water temperatures. Trout are still feeding heavily on the standard fare of scuds and sow bugs in sizes 12–16.

Expect to see a variety of bugs throughout the second half of the day, including black caddis, tan caddis, and PMDs. Fish are actively feeding subsurface on black and tan caddis pupae, along with the occasional PMD nymph.

Flies to Have in the Box

Ray Charles • Yum Yum Sow • Jelly Bean • Orange Scuds • Poodle Sniffer • Pheasant Tail • Hare’s Ear • Frenchies

The Bighorn is in great shape right now, with strong nymphing throughout the day and increasingly good dry-fly opportunities as the afternoon progresses. If you’re heading out, don’t overlook the evening caddis bite—it can be some of the most consistent dry-fly action of the day.

The Stillwater is fishing well right now with low, clear water and good summer conditions. Early mornings have been the ticket, with fish getting more active before the afternoon heat. Look for trout in riffles, deeper runs, along structure, and in the softer water.

Dry-fly fishing has been good with Chubby Chernobyls, hoppers, ants, and smaller mayfly patterns. A dry-dropper setup is a great way to cover water, especially with a Pat’s Rubber Legs, Perdigon, or Pheasant Tail underneath.

For streamers, stick with smaller patterns in the clear water. Sparkle Minnows, Mini Dungeons, Sculpzillas, and olive or black leeches are good choices. Fish them tight to banks, structure, and deeper buckets, especially early in the morning or when clouds move in.

Recommended flies:
• Chubby Chernobyl — #10–14
• Hoppers — #10–14
• Parachute Adams/PMDs — #16–20
• Ants & beetles — #12–18
• Pat’s Rubber Legs — #10–14
• Perdigons — #14–18
• Pheasant Tails — #16–18
• Sparkle Minnow — #4–8
• Mini Dungeon — #4–8
• Sculpzilla/Leeches — #4–8

Get out early, keep an eye on water temperatures, and be ready for some great late-summer Stillwater fishing!
