Sony’s first PlayStation began as a joint SNES CD-ROM project with Nintendo. Sony announced the “Play Station” at CES 1991. The next day, Nintendo disclosed a deal with Philips instead, ending the Sony partnership. Prototypes show the device was a hybrid with an SNES cartridge slot and CD drive, not CD-only.

Sony then developed a standalone PlayStation (1994), which became the first console to ship 100 million units. The title of best-selling console ever belongs to the PlayStation 2, launched in 2000, with around 150–160 million sold, widely reported as the most successful home console.
