When Is the Best Time to Plant Mulberry Trees in Your State?

If you’ve ever eaten a ripe Mulberry straight from the tree, you probably understand why people who grow them get so excited about these trees.

Mulberries are sweet, juicy and incredibly versatile. Eat them fresh, add them to pies and cobblers, make homemade jam or preserves—or just let the birds and wildlife enjoy some too.

But WHEN should you plant a Mulberry tree?

That depends on where you live:

🌳 Northern States — Late April through May
🌳 Northeast & Mid-Atlantic — Late March through April
🌳 Southeast — December through February
🌳 Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana & Florida — December through February
🌳 Midwest — March through April
🌳 Upper South & Appalachians — February through April

The easiest rule to remember is:

Plant Mulberry trees while they’re dormant and before spring bud break.

Why?

Dormant-season planting gives the roots a chance to begin establishing before the tree has to support leaves, new shoots and fruit production.

In the Southeast and other warmer areas, winter planting gives a new tree valuable time to establish before summer heat arrives. In colder Northern states, waiting until the soil has thawed and become workable is generally the better approach.

For best results, plant Mulberry trees in full sun with well-draining soil and water consistently during their first growing season.

When Is the Best Time to Plant Medlar Trees in Your State?
