CBD For dogs, The real examination
If you look you can find all kinds of claims about different dietary, vitamin, and Mineral supplements, some claim to be miracle workers while others have a more down to earth results.
First the big question is CBD safe for dogs? Caution CBD and THC are different, THC is toxic for dogs! Whereas CBD is safe please ensure any CBD supplement is THC Free.
Does it work and what is it used to treat, Currently there are about 25,000 published papers looking at the effects on animals with encouraging results for pain, especially arthritic pain, itchiness, anxiety, and even cancer, you can think of CBD as being a wide spectrum treatment.
Arthritis; Several studies have looked at CBD effectiveness against arthritic pain, These studies was done by recognized Veterinary Medicine including Cornell University with extremely positive results, Lead investigator Joe Wakshlag, DVM, PH.D., DACVN, stated that some dogs were initially so decrepit that owners considered euthanasia, but that even in a few days of CBD treatment the dogs were trotting around and even climbing stairs, Baylor University in their own independent study found similar results
Itchiness and other Skin related issues; Studies have found that CBD significantly reduces itchiness, inflammation and skin lesions by over 50 percent after 8 weeks of treatment CBD is also an antimicrobial with the added benefit (unlike other Topical medicines) completely safe if the dog ingests the topical solution. Unlike other Antifungal, Antibiotic, and antibacterial CBD does not cause other side effects like yeast infections and or increase risks of lowering the body’s ability to fight off these side effects.
Behavior; Anxiety and Aggression: Studies from the University of Australia has shown that, Shelter dogs with aggressive tendencies exhibit less aggression towards humans when tested after 15 days of CBD administration. CBD has a positive effect in calming the dogs, (works especially well with fireworks) HOWEVER unlike Trazodone which has known side effects including the increased risk of seizures and other Neurologic side effects CBD does not have any of these dangerous potential side effects.
Seizures: There are a large number of reports of CBD as an effective treatment for seizures in dogs, In one controlled study performed by the Colorado State University dogs given CBD for for 12 weeks compared to an equal number of placebo trials showed a decrease of 33 percent in Seizures. The study results was positive enough that they are increasing the studies scope to further explore the use of CBD as a treatment for Seizures.
Some further notes about CBD
Like many supplements CBD does have a shelf life and improper storage can dramatically shorten its potency and effect its flavor, While its not necessary to refrigerate it should be stored in a cool area and not be exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures many CBD products are infused with other oils such as fish oil or coconut oils along with a flavoring, extreme temperatures can cause the solution to separate or go rancid.
