🧵 Sunday Stitch Tip: Make 4 Half-Square Triangles at Once!
Last tim I showed you how I use seam guide tape when making half-square triangles. This week I want show you how to make FOUR HSTs at one time!
This is a great shortcut when you need several identical HSTs.
📐 First, figure out what size squares to start with.
Take the unfinished size your HST needs to be for your pattern and divide it by 0.64.
For example, if your pattern calls for a 3" HST:
3 ÷ 0.64 = 4.6875 (4 5/8")
So, start with two squares that are at least 4 5/8". I like to round up a little to give myself some extra room for squaring them up afterward, so even going up to 4 3/4" works, but know that you will need to trim them all.
Then:
➡️ Place your two squares right sides together.
➡️ Sew a ¼" seam around all four sides.
➡️ Cut the square diagonally from corner to corner in both directions, making an X.
➡️ Open and press — and just like that, you have FOUR half-square triangles!
➡️ Square each one up to the 3" unfinished size your pattern calls for, and they're ready to sew into your project.
⚠️ One thing to remember: This method creates HSTs with bias edges, so the outside edges can stretch. Handle them gently, especially when pressing and squaring them.
