Are you familiar with the concept of “factory seconds”?

Companies like Hull Pottery would often take items with defects and sell them in their factory stores. This one caught my attention, no matter how much I tried to clean the “dirt” off, it never budged.

Then I saw the X on the bottom… and all of my searching had led me to believe the bottom should’ve been a beautiful blue or green color.

This is a factory second! My very first one!

This was one of the treasures I found when shopping a yard sale this past weekend.

What factory seconds do you have? Do you find them to be more desirable or best left to the novice collector?

See the intended color in the comments!

Whew! Just spent hours at storage sorting through a portion of a couple lifetimes’ worth of personal belongings from the last 39 years.

This is what I’m bringing in addition to two trailers fullllllll to the brim to the yard sale/flea market at Freedom Market at The Find this weekend in Pilesgrove, NJ!!

I’ve got antiques, craft supplies, furniture, Plano & Pelican cases, fine art, regular art, ugly art, books, comics, figurines, and so damn much more!

We’re ready to make some deals this weekend… after that, we may just have to start our own store with all of this inventory 🥴

“I want to find a piece of furniture on the side of the road” I said to myself on my journey to drop off a veteran’s flag I had been keeping safe…

On my way back, I took another route, and there it was… dusty, outside of a dilapidated, abandoned home, on the curb.

I thanked the universe for giving so quickly after I asked…

Today I gave her a bit of a shine and some elbow grease and she’s ready to go to her forever home 🩵

My haul from the Salem County Yardsale at the fairgrounds!

I can’t believe the deals I got on some of this… most of it is for my own keeps or for my kids, but that Shawnee Pottery vase as well as those cute heart shaped lead glass boxes will be headed into inventory soon! Jury is still out on the 1950’s flamingo Pyrex, but maybe she’ll just spend a few months on my shelf first 😊

It’s not “Millennial Green”

It’s “Greatest Generation Green”

When this light green color first debuted in Fiestaware in the 30’s, the ladies of the Greatest Generation were dictating the design elements and preferences.

This color showed up in household design trends again in the 50’s, 70’s, and now again in the mid 20’s. Usually during times of economic downturn.

The dry foot (ring where the glaze wasn’t applied) is atypical of early Fiestaware, however some antique and vintage pieces have dry feet. Most older pieces have a couple of marks on the bottom from the kiln, but glaze over the entire base.

This light green mixing bowl has seen a few good kitchens in its day, but it’s safe to say she’s got a home with me (for now).

Just a few hours before I posted my latest auction finds to Woodstown’s local facebook group, the granddaughter of Warren E. Hitchner had been telling her grandson what a nail apron was and recalling the ones they had at her grandfather’s lumberyard.

She regretted never keeping one of her own.

Call it kismet, synchronicity, or G-d working in mysterious ways, but she found my post and we connected via messenger.

I invited Kelly to visit my photo studio where I learned some amazing details about Woodstown’s history that I had never heard before and seriously considered volunteering for the Pilesgrove-Woodstown Historical Society.

Hitchner’s Lumberyard existed at the location where Matteo’s sits today! When Mr. Hitchner passed away, his brother took on the business and eventually sold the property to the Matteo family, which has thrived in business in Woodstown ever since.

I’ll be putting together a longer blog about this… I got into this to have fun and maybe make a few dollars… but the history preservation and reunification of antiques and vintage items with their intended owners is giving me a serious sense of pride and this was a first for me.

Three things I’m a sucker for: the 90’s, uranium glass, and artifacts from Woodstown, New Jersey history.
