Intro to DJing Workshop Returns! 🏃🏽‍♂️💨

Curious about DJing but not sure where to start? This beginner-level workshop is an entry point into the fundamentals of DJing and our larger Miyagi Education curriculum.

Participants will get hands-on time with vinyl and digital DJ equipment while learning the basics of cueing, mixing, listening with intention, and understanding how DJs move through sound.

No prior experience is required. This session is designed for anyone interested in taking a first step into the craft in a welcoming, low-pressure setting.
Miyagi Education is the learning arm of Miyagi Records. We build workshops, labs, and learning spaces rooted in DJ culture, analog practice, Black and brown musical lineages, and community care.

Important note: There are 15 RSVP slots available because not everyone who RSVPs is able to attend. However, the maximum workshop capacity is 8 participants. Entry will be first come, first served. Early arrival is strongly suggested.

Miyagi Education ⛩️🎒

For the past three years, we’ve been quietly building something alongside the shop — teaching, learning, and growing with our community through DJ and production classes, open sessions, and shared time around music. What started as an extension of Miyagi Records is now stepping forward with its own name and direction.

formalizes that work: a school rooted in sound, culture, and access, with a long-term vision of becoming a nonprofit dedicated to making music education more open, sustainable, and community-driven.

Our mark reflects that intention. It incorporates the Japanese shoshinsha symbol — traditionally used to signify a beginner — and centers the idea of “beginner’s mind.” Not as a phase to move beyond, but as a practice to return to: staying open, curious, and willing to learn at every stage.

Whether you’re touching turntables for the first time or refining something you’ve been building for years, that mindset shapes how we teach, how we show up, and how we build with others.

This is us stepping into that work more fully — giving it structure, space, and a future beyond the shop.

Rotating each month we host Open Decks (D+D Edition) — a welcoming, low-pressure session where DJs and learners can practice transitions, try new blends, and build confidence on the decks. You’ll also catch guest takeovers from local selectors, DJs, and community partners — special nights that bring fresh sounds, stories, and different ways of listening into the room. It’s that time of year again 🆕

We’ll be taking the next two weeks to reset, remodel, and restore the Fortress. The shop will be closed for regular business during this time, but buying and selling will still be available by appointment (links in bio).

We’ll be back soon — reopening on the 15th, refreshed and ready for a full year of great music, emerging talent, and expanded music education.
