It’s Women’s History Month, and in addition to calling your representatives about stopping the SAVE Act, which will disenfranchise millions of voters, predominantly women, you should also read more stories by and about women. is making it easy to do so with their bookseller recommended titles (including some recommended by yours truly!) that will be 20% off this month. Check them out at the link in the bio, stop by the Reading Women Leaders Book Club list while you’re there, and remember you could and should be reading books by and about women all year long. Happy reading!

Hard to see Pittsburgh bookstores without a stop at Riverstone! They had candles in the shape of vegetables that I just couldn’t resist and the tree in their children’s section is to die for.

This adorable little bookstore, , stole my heart when I visited earlier this week, especially when I found out that the young person behind the counter had been the high school student of the current owners - how sweet was that? Loved their name (can you guess what book it’s from??) (answer in tags), their curated selection of books, their design aesthetic (I want that wallpaper!), their phone booth, and definitely went home with one of their book-themed pennant banners.

Had the most fabulous time visiting independent bookstores in Pittsburgh for Winter Institute this week! , Pittsburgh’s first romance bookstore, is gorgeous, thoughtfully curated, and offers a robust event line up - all even more impressive when you know they’ve been open less than 3 months! Got some great book recommendations and love how much love their community is already giving them.

January Acts of Community & Resistance:

- Led the Banned Books Book Club January meeting at in Downer’s Grove, IL, as part of my FT role - we discussed by and we got to hear from the book’s editor, Todd Stocke, and other Sourcebooks staff members who I serve alongside in the company Right-to-Read Taskforce (link in bio for RtR resources)

- Leading the first in-person meeting of the Reading Women Leaders Book Club that my local library let me start as a library book club this year. We read women leaders in their fields, ideally writing their own stories so we can center their voices. We’ll be meeting every other month, and we’re beginning with by Dr. Jane Goodall (in her memory)

- Participating in local seed swaps and swapping seeds with friends around the country, like q***r fiction author (her q***r romances are personal faves; get them via the Love is Love book list on our site). We’re planning a bigger garden ourselves this year and are in talks with a neighbor about creating a community food stand to share with neighbors who may not have enough.

- Strengthening community bonds by getting more involved. We attended a Violins of Hope concert put on at the local chabad, where musicians played violins belong to Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust, which had miraculously been saved and now restored and are traveling the country in this moving, living exhibition of instrument, music, and memory.

- And we got a cat, because joy is resistance. Meet Toasted Marshmallow, aka Toastie, Marshmallow, Marshie, etc. She’s a one-year-old rescue and the whole family loves her already. Expect a photo dump soon of her first few weeks settling into the River Dog family, including becoming friends with our current River DOG, Pippi.

Booksellers are the best. F**k ICE.

Booksellers are the best. F**k ICE.

Wow. So much to address.

First things first. F**K ICE. They murdered Alex Pretti on Saturday in cold blood. I won't accept any other explanation. The young man is dead because of Donald Trump, Kristi Noem and the rest of that ghoulish group.

Because of this I was angry enough to go to the site of Alex's murder to pay respects and witness for myself the ICE thugs who support these actions. I got there about an hour after the murder and went right up to the intersection that ICE had taped off and stood guard. There were perhaps 50-100 of them and several hundred observers/protesters milling around. Some were right up front yelling and swearing. I became one of them.

No one made a move toward the agents but suddenly several canisters of tear gas were thrown into the crowd. A number of agents broke the tape and ran after people along a side street to my left for no reason I could see. I stood where I was as more tear gas and flash bombs (they were loud) were thrown at us. There was shooting, probably pepper balls. Most people had backed off but a few had gas masks and stayed near the line. I had no gas mask and I don't know what made me stay but I did. And I was screaming even louder.

I was screaming and sobbing, not from gas, but from Fury and sadness. I don't think the gas had affected me at this point. A gas-masked camera man had been circling around near me asked if I was OK. I was physically fine but I had snapped. I was so angry that people hired by our government could do this to innocent people. Hence the rant which seems to have gone viral.

People have been so kind - from the concerned people there at the scene offering me help to the many, many thousands who have watched the video and offered their support. Those who ordered books from us (it will take a bit to get things sorted out) and eventually crashed our website (working on that too), I thank you. People discovered the old GOFUNDME we had after the riots after George Floyd was murdered and our store was heavily damaged and have been making donations there. I'm greatly touched by that but I would like to offer that money to our local food shelves if donors wouldn't mind. The store is intact and doing well and the money should go to a greater cause.

I'll have more for you later today and in upcoming days. Thank you all and stay strong. I'm still fu***ng angry! Greg

Resharing from our friends at South Main Book Co who said it sadly, perfectly: “Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis mother murdered by ICE, was also a prize-winning poet; link below connects to her published work.

May her memory, may the memories of ALL unalived by orphan-making regimes, be a blessing.”

Renee Nicole Good, 37, mother to a six-year-old boy, was murdered earlier today by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, a few blocks from her home. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune: [An ICE agent] s…

A little indie bookstore with a big personality

Welcome to River Dog Book Co.! We’re an online independent bookstore NOW, holding pop-up events, author events, and book clubs, with plans to become a bookmobile within a few years. We focus on diverse, representative, global, and inclusive literature of all genres and for all reading levels. RDBC is the dream of BrocheAroe Fabian, an Anthropologist, a world traveler, a writer, and a member of the book industry since 2007. After working for 1 museum library, 1 corporate bookstore, 2 publishers, and 4 independent bookstores, she has finally made her own bookstore dream come true. She works hard to foster cross-cultural understanding and communication wherever she goes.
