Life's Patina is housed in a renovated 1800's dairy bank barn that is the perfect backdrop to showcase our unique furniture, art, home and gift items. We have themed pop up sales centered around the seasons that bring together this merchandise in artfully arranged vignettes. Event planning, vintage rentals, styling and staging services are also available.

As this Labor Day weekend arrives and we’re on the theme of road trips, I’m reminded just how much we packed into one unforgettable trip from NYC to Massachusetts to Maine and back to Massachusetts again!

My husband, oldest son and I packed the car and headed to our first stop, NYC, to visit my daughter and her husband, with one of our other sons flying in from Arizona to join us. We saw The Lost Boys on Broadway, wandered through the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum museum housed in the beautiful Carnegie Mansion and soaked up a little city time together.

Then, we headed north to Massachusetts, where we dropped our son Shane off for a retreat before continuing on to Winter Harbor, Maine. We checked in on my parents’ cottage near Schoodic Point and started dreaming about how we might put our own spin on its renovation. The sense of deep calm and peace we felt looking out at the water there was unmatched and its proximity to Acadia National Park is a lovely plus as well! We stayed at Elsa’s Inn, a charming little spot with the kind of coastal breeze that makes you want to throw open the windows and stay awhile. Now I have to ask… would you be interested in staying in a cottage up here if we made that dream a reality?

From Winter Harbor, we headed to Portland, Maine. It was our first time visiting and we absolutely loved it. We took in tons of local favorites, incredible views and nautical history. After that, I dropped my husband and son at the airport to head home to Pennsylvania and I continued on to Brimfield, Massachusetts to meet up with friends for the Brimfield Antique Flea Market.

From city to country, skyscrapers to lighthouses, museums to antique fields, family time to friend time, and lots of miles in between, it was the perfect summer road trip!

Whether you’re squeezing in one last summer adventure or simply enjoying a slow long weekend at home, I hope you enjoy every moment!

Trains, planes & automobiles…and the magic of the journey✨

I’ve always loved to travel. Give me an open road, a train winding through the countryside or a seat by the window on an airplane, and I’m pretty much in my element. There’s something about going somewhere that has always stirred something in me.

In my newest blog post linked below I take a little trip down memory lane, back to childhood road trips in our wood-paneled station wagon, nighttime drives with my dad, the glow of the highway lines, eight-track tapes playing softly and the anticipation of arriving at a Howard Johnson’s for the night. I remember the little things so vividly… the hotel stationery, unpacking my doll’s clothes into a drawer, watching for signs along the highway, and wondering what adventures the next day might bring. I also share memories of train trips, dining cars, my very first flight to California and Hawaii, and even a college spring-break train adventure that turned out to be a little less magical than I remembered.

But as I wrote, I realized this story isn’t really about trains, planes or automobiles at all. It’s about the magic of childhood, the people we traveled with, the places we discovered, and the way our memories have a way of becoming part of who we are.

And as we head into Labor Day weekend and the beautiful travel days of fall, I find myself wanting to hold onto a little of that old-fashioned magic! Put down the phones. Play the license plate game. Sing along to the radio. Stop somewhere unexpected. Bring along a few treats you wouldn’t normally buy. Be together, really be together. Someday, those seemingly ordinary moments may become the stories you remember most.

The sun rose and set beautifully on our annual family beach trip. We have gathered here for over 40 years, each family joining for whatever time allows. While this trip looked a bit different than trips of past years, as children who live far away couldn’t all make the journey, the scenery remains the same, causing all of us to pause in reverence. The sands and coastline shift, mimicking the changing days of our lives yet the activities we partake in remain a constant. Filled with laughter, catch up conversations, music, beach walks, bike rides, good food, sunrises, sunsets and this year, even a family wedding, our hearts are full and even more deeply tied to this sense of place. Despite the intensive heat when we first arrived followed by days of pouring rain, we still looked out at the ocean with awe and watched… together… whatever Mother Nature brought us. Until next year… 💕

A deeper look at Life’s Patina at Willowbrook Farm✨Life’s Patina began with a dream and our move to a 14-acre property with an old home and outbuildings. In 2011, after restoring our historic bank barn to its former beauty, I opened it for our first Life’s Patina Barn Sale. My husband, dear friends and I put signs up around town, invited friends and family, filled the barn with vintage furniture, architectural salvage and treasures I had collected over the years and hoped people might come.
I had no idea what to expect. But people did come. And every year after, more and more people found their way down our driveway and through the barn doors. Since 2011, we’ve opened in the spring, fall and around the holidays as a pop-up shopping experience. Recently, we’ve scaled back our Barn Sales, transforming them into a more intimate experience that goes back to our roots and love of vintage furniture and architectural salvage. But that’s not all we do at Life’s Patina Willowbrook Farm!

Willowbrook has also become a place where we bring together some of our favorite things—entertaining, gathering and hosting intentional, memorable events and experiences, along with providing beautiful design and florals. We host intimate weddings, baby and bridal showers, milestone birthdays, private dinners and other special gatherings, offering ways to make each celebration feel personal and memorable. From the venue itself to vintage rentals, floral design, paper goods, styling and event design, we love helping bring all the pieces and your dream to life. We also host workshops and seasonal events, as well as photoshoots throughout the year.

You may find your way to Willowbrook to search for the perfect vintage piece for your home. You may come to celebrate a wedding or gather around a table with people you love. You may spend an afternoon learning to arrange flowers, decorate cookies or set a seasonal table. Or stand amongst the historic details while a photographer snaps photos of you and your family or fiancé. Whatever way, we’re so thrilled to share Willowbrook Farm with you all.

A little reintroduction✨If you’re new here or perhaps you’ve been following along for years but have never quite understood how all of the pieces of Life’s Patina fit together, I thought it was a good time to tell you a little more about who we are!

Life’s Patina began with my love of old things, historic buildings and the stories they carry with them. I always say I feel as though I was a scullery maid in my past life and am a history lover through and through. I love the idea of taking something that has been overlooked or forgotten and giving it another life, that something doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful and that sometimes, the marks of time are what makes a piece or place beautiful in the first place.

When my family and I came across Willowbrook Farm for sale 20 years ago, I was immediately drawn to the history and charm of the place and wanted to preserve its beauty for my family and for generations to come. As many old properties do, the farm needed a lot of work but it was a worthwhile labor of love. As we restored the main home, outbuildings and bank barn over our first decade there, I found myself collecting architectural salvage and vintage pieces to both furnish the spaces and to adaptively reuse as built ins to complement the style of the home. As my curated collection of treasures grew and my children got older, I took the jump to open up the barn as a unique pop-up store of sorts, our Barn Sales.

That was the start of Life’s Patina! LP has grown far beyond that first Barn Sale, but the heart of it remains the same. We aim to celebrate the beauty of life every day, both past and present, to honor what came before while making room for what comes next, to create memorable and intentional places and experiences that you can carry in your heart long after they conclude, to preserve and celebrate places and their stories for future generations.

Today, Life’s Patina encompasses our original location, Life's Patina Willowbrook Farm by Meg Veno in Malvern, PA and our newer location, Life’s Patina Mercantile & Cafe in Chester Springs, PA. Over the next few days we’ll do a deeper dive into each of our locations and what they offer. Stay tuned!
