New beekeeper often struggle to find the queen in the hive. I don’t often think to take pictures while I’m working, but we had a chance today so I grabbed a quick picture of this beauty. Take a look and see if you can find the queen. She has a slender body that is longer than the others. She’s not the largest be in the high sometimes because the male drones can be larger, but she has the longest abdomen so she can reach her bottom into the cells to lay the egg.

talked larva, pupa, cocoons, and all about honeybee specifically. They just ended a unit on insects and got rewarded with some honey sticks and goat milk and honey soap.

Alyssa and Kylara were making splits today. Wasn’t the best weather, but they were able to get several done before the clouds rolled in this afternoon. The bees know when the weather is going to turn and they behave completely different.

This is a beautiful tree in our front yard. I had ChatGPT create an ultraviolet image that shows how honeybees see the same tree. The flowers actually have UV landing trails on the flowers to guide pollinators to their nectar sources. Honeybees can’t see red, so the pinks and reds we see actually create contrast to make the UV landing guides easier to see. They also have thousands of lenses on each of their 5 eyes that drones, queens, and workers have. Lenses per bee type (approximate)

* Worker bee: ~ 5,000–6,000 lenses per eye
→ ~10,000–12,000 total
* Queen bee: ~ 3,000–4,000 lenses per eye
→ ~6,000–8,000 total
* Drone (male): ~ 8,000–10,000+ lenses per eye
→ ~16,000–20,000+ total

How is that for super cool?!

Honey doesn’t need to be saved for special occasions. It’s one of the easiest ingredients to use every day.

A few simple ways people use Bee Great honey in their kitchens:

• Stirred into tea or coffee
• Drizzled on yogurt or oatmeal
• Spread on toast or biscuits
• Mixed into salad dressings
• Used in marinades for chicken or vegetables

Different honeys bring different flavors too.

Cajun Hot Honey works especially well on pizza.
Curry Honey pairs nicely with roasted vegetables.
Ginger or Turmeric honey are popular in tea.
