Believe it or not, this story starts with a coin flip.

Bret Richards was deciding whether to go to auction school, so he left the decision to chance. Heads meant auction school.

Heads.

He started that same week.

While there, a connection led Bret to a national real estate auction company and helped launch a career in auctions and real estate that has now lasted more than two decades.

Today, Bret is co-owner and primary auctioneer at Capstone Auction Partners.

What if it had landed tails? Fortunately, we’ll never have to find out.

You found something you want to bid on. But you can’t spend all day watching the screen.

That’s where a maximum bid can help. Enter the most you’re comfortable paying, and the bidding system can bid incrementally on your behalf as competing bids come in, without going beyond the maximum you set.

You stay in control of your limit without having to follow every bid. Just remember: decide what you’re comfortable spending before you bid, and always review the auction terms.

Never participated in an online auction? Here’s the process in a nutshell.

Find the auction, register to bid, browse the lots and review the information. When you find something you want, place your bid and keep an eye on the bidding and notifications.

If you’re the winning bidder, follow the auction instructions for the next steps.

And remember, you do not have to figure everything out on your own. Read the auction terms, review the details and ask questions if something is not clear.

Everybody was a first-time bidder once.

A coin flip changed the course of Bret Richards’ career.

When Bret was deciding whether to attend auction school, he left it to a coin. Heads meant go. Heads it was.

He started auction school that same week, and the decision eventually launched a career that has taken him from national real estate auctions to becoming co-owner and primary auctioneer at Capstone.

Bret is a Texas A&M ag business graduate and has spent more than two decades in the auction and real estate industries.
