Cumberland Gap FolkFest Returns August 8, 2026!!
A full-day celebration of Appalachian music, traditional arts, storytelling, craftsmanship, and community in historic downtown Cumberland Gap
CUMBERLAND GAP, Tenn. — Appalachian traditions will take center stage once again when Cumberland Gap FolkFest returns Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in historic downtown Cumberland Gap. The free, family-friendly festival invites visitors from across the region to experience a full day of Appalachian music, traditional arts, handcrafted goods, storytelling, local food, and the mountain heritage that continues to shape the region.
Originally founded in 1974 by the Cumberland Gap Townlift Committee, FolkFest became a beloved summer tradition before taking a hiatus. Since its revival in 2022, the festival has grown through the leadership of Guardians of the Gap, Cumberland Gap, local businesses, volunteers, artists, and community partners committed to preserving and celebrating Appalachian culture.
This year’s FolkFest will feature more than 60 artists, craftspeople, demonstrators, musicians, and vendors representing communities throughout the Appalachian region. Throughout downtown, visitors will find live performances, traditional craft demonstrations, educational exhibits, hands-on activities, and opportunities to meet the artists and culture bearers keeping Appalachian traditions alive.
Festival Highlights
· Live Appalachian music throughout the day under the main tent and at locations across downtown.
· Traditional craft demonstrations featuring broom makers, potters, painters, woodworkers, herbalists, fiber artists, and other regional artisans.
· Heritage talks and storytelling celebrating the people, places, and traditions of Appalachia.
· A children’s area with hands-on activities and traditional Appalachian games.
· Regional artisans, makers, and food vendors showcasing Appalachian craftsmanship, creativity, and hospitality.
Many featured artists participate in the Tennessee Folklife Program, supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission, which helps preserve and celebrate Tennessee’s rich cultural traditions for future generations.
“FolkFest is about more than celebrating our past,” said organizers with Guardians of the Gap. “It is about bringing people together, supporting local artists, strengthening our community, and ensuring Appalachian traditions continue to thrive for future generations.”
The festival is presented by Guardians of the Gap, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the history, heritage, culture, and natural beauty of Cumberland Gap. Throughout the year, the organization also hosts Streamin’ the Gap, Gap-tober, Christmas in the Gap, and other community events that celebrate the region’s unique character.
Major funding for FolkFest is provided by the Tennessee Arts Commission. Additional support comes from local businesses, financial institutions, community organizations, and dozens of sponsors whose generosity helps keep FolkFest free and accessible to the public.
Visitors are encouraged to spend the day exploring Cumberland Gap’s historic downtown, including its shops, restaurants, museums, and scenic surroundings. Free parking will be available throughout town, with additional parking provided at Tex Turner Arena on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University. Complimentary shuttle service will operate throughout the day.
Whether returning to a favorite tradition or visiting for the first time, guests will find Cumberland Gap FolkFest to be an opportunity to experience the music, craftsmanship, stories, and hospitality that make Appalachia unlike anywhere else.
