In honor of Womenโ€™s History Month, I want to recognize Espiritu Chijulla, a remarkable Chumash/Gabrielino-Tongva woman born in 1836 near San Fernando and baptized at Mission San Fernando. Fluent in Spanish, she defied social norms of her era as the longtime partner of Basque rancher Miguel Leonis โ€” known later as โ€œThe King of Calabasasโ€ for his vast land holdings.

They shared their lives for nearly 30 years until Leonis died in 1889. His will left most of his $300,000 estate to relatives in France. Espiritu was offered $10,000, half cash and half investments, but only if she agreed not to challenge the will. She chose to fight. After 16 years in court, she won in 1905 โ€” a rare legal victory for a Native American woman at the time. Espiritu passed away seven months later on May 10, 1906, and is buried at Mission San Fernando Rey de Espaรฑa.

We honor you, Espiritu ๐Ÿ’— To learn more about her life, visit the Leonis Adobe Museum in Calabasas.
