Here's a little funeral etiquette for you...

It is customary for us to include the sender's mailing address on the back of all sympathy cards. I am often asked why that is needed, and some customers request that their address not be included. Here is some useful information:

* This information is provided to the deceased's family so they have the correct address handy when composing thank you notes, eliminating the need for them to have to search for your address.

* Including your address ensures your thoughtful gesture can be properly acknowledged by the family. It is another show of respect to the family that can make the grieving process less difficult.

* Your address is not visible while the flower is on display...it is on the back of the card, but can be viewed by the family once the card is removed by the funeral director and given to the them.

My shop includes ALL addresses on sympathy cards unless otherwise requested, and in those situations, we do our best to explain the need for the address, but sometimes we are unsuccessful.

And yes...it is proper and customary to include the mailing addresses for extended family members. I've had people explain that they are the deceased's cousin, so "they'll know my address". I don't argue, but I do wonder...I can't tell you any of my cousin's addresses...can you?

Please allow us to make the difficult days after the passing of a loved one easier on the family...let us include your address on the card. I know the grieving family will greatly appreciate it.

I've had a few people recently ask about why I close my shop so early at 3pm. If you've followed my page for a few years, you understand. For those that are new fans to my page...

I am now at retirement age...62. I've owned a flower shop for over 42 years. For the majority of those years, a typical week would find me working 60 hours minimum, and during a busy week, I could easily log upwards of 80 hours or more. As I neared 60 years old, I realized that I could not keep up that pace without it beginning to affect my health adversely.

During the covid pandemic, like every business in the country, I shortened my hours. When we began to come out of the restrictions and return to normal, I realized that the shorter hours were much less stressful. Now, closing at 3pm, I might get home by 5pm...but before, when I closed at 5 or 6pm, I would get home at 7 or so. The new shorter hours worked so much better for me and my home life. Granted, I can still pull some long hours...just last week I worked two 13 hour days in a row...but those are not common.

Again, I'm 62 years old, but I'm not even close to being ready to retire. I feel like I can do this for another 10 years or so. But, I had to lighten the load a bit, and the shorter hours have certainly helped. Who knows...I may even still be doing this when I'm 80.

After all, at 3pm, very few people are calling wanting something that same day. By that time, I'm finished with that day and have moved on to prepare for the next. So 3pm seems like a natural time to shut the door and call it a day.

There are times throughout the year when I will keep the shop open later...Valentine's Week, Mother's Week, the first week or so of December...and those will be announced well in advance. But for the most part, you can expect to find me here in my shop, open and ready for business from 9-3 Eastern, Monday through Friday.
