Communication doesn’t have to be perfect, polished, or happen in one specific way to matter.

A gesture, a point, speech, AAC, eye gaze, typing, or a combination of methods can all carry a message. The important part is recognizing what the learner is communicating first, then modeling additional language when it’s helpful.

More ways to communicate means more opportunities to participate, make choices, share ideas, connect, and self-advocate. 💛

Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is give a student a little more time.

A pause might mean they’re processing, deciding how to respond, locating a symbol, preparing a motor response, or navigating their communication system.

If we jump in too quickly, we can miss the chance to see what they could have done independently.
