1700-1800 Candle Wick Trimmer Snuffer, Antique Candle Scissors , Brass Candle Wick Trimmer Snuffer

the jussaxe is associated with the use of wax and tallow candles. The wick did not burn at the same rate as the candle and therefore had to be kept behind, snuffed out. The candle became weaker the longer the wick was and it could also start to smell, smoke or fall down and melt away some of the candle. In the Nordic countries there is evidence for the use of candlesticks for church use during the 14th century. During the 18th century, the practice became more common and reached outside the circles of the higher estates. The feet on the light scissors are a feature added during the 18th century, during the end of the century the suspension that holds the legs together is also added. From the middle of the 19th century, candles with self-burning wicks became common and thus the need for candle scissors decreased. (Source: Nilsson, N "Ljussaxen" in Kulturen 1983.)
